Differences in engines

I am picking up a small six this weekend and am told it is a 250, is there any way to tell the difference between a 200 and 250 by looking at them? I think I read somewhere that the head is different but cant remember what is different about it. I need the 250 so I dont want the 200 by mistake, it is practically new with 30,000 miles on it. Thank you in advance

Generally the 200 and 250 heads are the same after the mid 1970's. Quick way to tell a 250 from a 200 is the number of water pump bolts holding it to the short block the 250's are the only small six's that have four bolts and all other small six'es from 144 to 200's only have three. The other big difference is the bell housing size and bolt patteren all 250's have a six bolt bell housing like a SBF 302 V8, all the other small six'es have much smaller diameter bell housings. For more info on the engine block differances see below link. Hope that helps you. Good luck on the new engine

"small 6 casting numbers"... 6th or 7th box from the very end
https://fordsix.com/ci/SmallSixSpecs.html#cast

there's 6 of them 1960 -'96
144ci, 170, 200, 250 and the big 6 - 240 & the famous (''the gasser thats a diesel'') the 300 or 4.9L that went efi near the end of the 30 yr run. Count the water pump bolts and let us now...
If u want the 250 (my choice) make sure the intake is not seoerate (unboltable), Look at some pic and the shop manual sketches on the associated pages w/that link I gave U. It from the above 'tech archive; blue box top of this page click where the crossed screwdriver/wrench is.

Howdy Aknott:

And welcome to THe Forum.
Iding a 250 small block engine-
* the starter is blow the oil pan line. All other small block sixes mount the starter above the oil pan line. Exception- Some 80s 200 came with low mount starters so look at the number of water pump mounting bolts first.
*250 engines use 4 bolt to mount the water pump to the block. All other small sixes used 3 bolts to mount the water pump.
* A 250 block, measured from the oil pan mounting line to the cylinder head mounting line measures 9.5". All previous small sixes measure 7.8".
* Bell housing changes have already been covered by Bubba.

Let us know what you find.

Adios, David

Check the p/n on the passenger side of the block. It has to be at least C9. If it is any number lower than C9, it can not be a 250.

69 was the first year a 250 was offered, so C9 was the first block number used.
