Took my buddy's new 200/ME ('67 convertible) combination out driving today. Noticed some smoke on the highway but wrote it off as rings still seating. A few minutes later I thought I heard a little noise from the engine. We slowed down, realised the engine was making a knocking noise. The oil pressure was falling also. By the time we got off the highway we discovered that the engine had lost almost all it's oil. We didn't see any obvious problem, so filled it with oil and fired it. Turns out someone had left an oil filter seal on and installed a new oil filter and seal on top of it. It finally let go. I removed the extra seal, filled it again, and we drove it home - knocking and tapping prety badly.

I'm guessing that the rocker arms are toast (roller tipped ones too). We are crossing out fingers that we didn't loose any bearings. We will have time to open it up next week. :(

suckage

is this the one that you recently posted the pics of? if so, even worse suckage

Bummer. You may find that the rockers are ok. One of the advantages of rollers is that they need less oil. The cylinder walls should be ok since you caught it fairly quickly.

Sounds like teardown time, but if you're lucky, a new set of bearings and lifters will square you away.

If you find bearing damage, make sure you thoroughly "wash" the block before reassembly - you don't want any debris floating around afterward!

That happened to me the first time I changed oil in it 25 years ago, light came on and I promptly shut it down, I'm talkin 2 second reaction time. Put almost 100,000 miles on that 258 after that with no oil proablems.

I've heard of alot of oil change outfits buying engines because they forget to make sure the oil filter gasket comes off.

That blowz.

What can I say other than...

It wasn't me I SWEAR!!! I know that I didn't screw the filter on. I won't name any names though....
