Distributor gear problems

Well, In the last 2 days, I have had 2 dizzy's fail. The gear has been eaten up and now the cam has broken teeth as well. I am at a loss as to what happened. At first, I thought it was a faulty rebuild, but the same thing happened to the second one in 36 hours. The shaft appears to be pushed back up into the housing of the dizzy as well. They were rebuilt DII's, the car ran fine when it was installed and the first one ran for almost a years worth of running, probably 2000 miles, the second one lasted as I said maybe 50 miles. It looks like the comet is down until I can pull evrything out and check it out again. The first time I drained all the oil and pulled the pan and flushed it out. I have to say, I did not pull the cam and check, but I probably should have. The teeth I could see, were OK. Any suggestions as to what and why?

I have this theory that aftermarket cam billets have a slight mismatch in the gears, compared to original cams. Most people don't agree with me - but haven't offered a convincing alternative reason.

The fault you describe has been prevalent in Australia for some years now.

8) you might be right addo. i know that there are a number of dist gears failing with high volume oil pumps, though not likely in your case. cam material may have changed some, and be incompatable with the stock dist gear. the dist gear may have been bad from the rebuilder, marginal in the first case, and just plain bad in the second. and then we come to oil technology, it may be that the lack of zinc components in the oil, same problem that causes flat tappet cams to wear faster, is causing this problem as well.

I have a new dizzy gear on order. I guess I will check more closely to see it matches correctly.
Should those new gear surfaces be coated with cam lube and broken in?

YES, use moly lube on the new gear & put GM E.O.S-engine oil supplement in the crankcase.

I had a similiar wear problem & had to replace the camshaft as well.

This absence of zinc additive for scuffing is for real, you need to use the best oil with additives & or shell rotella diesel oil which still has the zinc additive. William

Oh no I put in a DSII setup without lube, and I have noticed it starting to make noise....... Is there anything I can do to save it????

Thanks for your opinions, I will not know what the H_ll happened until I can get the time to tear it apart. I just wanted to drive it this summer, not work on it all the time. It's getting awful discouraging, it seems like if I want to drive it, I have to work on it for awhile to drive it for a couple of days and then work on it somemore.

I just had my dist. gear fail after 50 miles, I posted on the aussie six forum, That seems to be the way it is going fix it one day drive it , then fix it some more !
