I have a DuraSpark distributor in my 76 Mav w/250 & C4. I have been playing with the advance curve and believe my centrifugal advanve is too much. My reluctor arm is a 13L and 18L. I am currently using the 13L openning and all things being equal, I should have 26 degrees of centrifugal advance. I have set the static advance to 10 degrees. I want to try a 10L to see if I can get rid of the cruise ping. Under hard acceleration and hill climbs I cannot hear any pinging. But at a steady speed, on level ground at 65 mph, I hear a rattle noise. Like a disk brake pad rattle. But that's not it. Does anyone know where I can get this part?
Thanks,
Ken

Ken, you need to see how much vacuum advance you have.

You may need a different advance can with less degrees & or using an allen wrench turn the adjustment screw in the vacuum hose opening to slow the advance to a higher vacuum.

You really need a vacuum pump so you can see the changes you made from your adjustments.

See what you have & then make another post if further questions need to be answered. William

Hey William,
I had a 17 in. at 750 rpm measurement.
Thanks,
Ken
I was looking at the Crane Adjustable Vacuum module, p/n CRN-99606-1. What do you think?

Ken, if the crane has less vacuum advance in degrees it will be ok.

I will have to check out that part???

What you may need is a can with less advance & then adjust the tension on the spring so the advance comes in at a higher vacuum reading, which means under slight acceration the vacuum advance will be less than before. Hope this helps.

Hey William,
I ordered the Crane Cam's Distributor advance kit, P/N CRN99607-1, for the Duraspark distributor today. I will be interested in seeing how changing the weights and the ability of adjusting the vacuum advance, will help with the engine's pinging. Maybe I can coax another 100hps out of this horsepower monster!

Well, I just got home and opened the Crane adjustable advance kit. It's for a V8 distrubutor. The advance arm is positioned on the opposite side of the distributor. Dadgumit.

Well, yesterday I bought an adjustable vacuum advance module from Advanced auto, PN VCF426, ($25.00). After installing it and checking my initital timming marks just to make sure that everything is good, I went for a drive, many miles. I kept adjusting the vacuum module until no more pinging. Now the car is running 70 mph without pinging.
Now I can spend time removing the power steering unit to get non power steering. That's got to be worth 40 hps don't cha-think!!!!!
Ken

Autocrafters has a bypass kit for your power steering pump thats supposed to make things easier-paint the car yellow -it's good for another 50hp!!!

Hey John,
I just received the horse power builder, steering adapter from Auto Krafters. The way I figure it, if a K&N filter is good for 20 hps and a Flow Master Muffler is good for 15 hps, the sky is the limit for any horse power draining pump on the engine. Shoot, I'll have a 300 hps 250 I6 here soon, with just bolt on's and off's. The reason I'm removing the power steering unit is it leaks. And the adapter is a cheap fix.
