I just got my 200 crossflow running about 2 weeks ago and have been fixing all the minor problems ! now the engine stopped and I had no spark. I pulled the dizzy (dura spark II ) and found the gear teeth all wore off, they are real thin and sharp, I only have about 50 miles on the motor ?What did I screw up or any ideas what happened? I had the shaft cut down and everything seemed to fit good. Thanks, Mike

What is the cam? What gear is it - new aftermarket, new OTC or original?

We are getting so many of these at present. If you have a look at the "Small Sixes" forum, you'll find one guy posted with a damaged cam and busted gear this week just past.

It's not anything "you" have done. More that there is a problem with some part everyone is being supplied. :x

I just asked on the 200 forum if cam lube should be used on the new gear.
Did it get greased up?
YES, use moly lube on the new gear & put GM E.O.S-engine oil supplement in the crankcase.

I had a similiar wear problem & had to replace the camshaft as well.

This absence of zinc additive for scuffing is for real, you need to use the best oil with additives & or shell rotella diesel oil which still has the zinc additive. William

The cam is a CROW cam and I put Castrol synthetic in the motor, I am not sure if a lube was used ? It is the stock gear that came on the distributor, ( I read about wear but this much after only 50 miles ? ) The cam gear looks good, no visible wear on the teeth.

I suggest you get a Crow gear, and also consider contacting them to advise of your experience... They do advise use of the DG-2 or DG-2A (depending on shaft size) with their cams.

Still - this is happening too often! I wonder if the billets have the helix already cut?

Crow will sell direct. I think mine was $55 at reduced margin. That's about USD$40. Shipping by airmail would be a further $15 Aussie (at a guess).

Monday (today  ) is a holiday here. If you called in 36 hours from my post here, you'd get them.

Regards, Adam.

The billets Crow are using are "Engine Power Componants" , "EPC" Blanks .
I had a blank in stock at a previous workplace .I had this blank custom ground , and it chewed the dissy gear up.I order in a new crow cam and gear .When the cam arrived i checked the castings on the two cams and indeed they are the two same castings.
There may possibly be a problem with the castings, and i think this is why crow recommend the DG2 or DG2A gear to go with the cam.

Crow have stated that it is a Ford factory misallignment where the dissy sits in the block , and the new gear is designed to rectify the problem.

Do you run a hi-volume oil pump?

Sorry to hear about the problem Falconator, its a sicking fealing pulling the dissy and see all the mess. I know i had to pull the engine and change the bearings , cam , oil pump and some rings on a brand new engine after the same amount of running time maybe even less.

I run a brand new BOSCH gear to suit my BOSCH dissy .......munched it.
GET THE CROW GEAR.
.

this is common, use the crow gear i think its harder also and wont wear out otherwise it will keep on chewing them.

This topic has been covered years ago on here, use a Crow gear and the problem goes away.. It doesnt matter if its a crow cam, wade, speco, if u leave the stock gear on the dissy it will chew it out

Thanks for all the input , I'm trying to get ahold of Crow and get a gear asap ! I worked mt A$$ off to get the car ready for some car shows now I'm going to miss them . Oh well there will always be more, no one said being different would be easy ! Cheers, Mike

For what its worth, I had a problem with a US made camshaft eating up
distributor gears. The cam grinder is no longer in business, and
I have since had to change the cam, due to the gear on the cam
'chunking off'. This happened well over a year ago. I had the
cam supplier at the time suggest something 'might have fell
down the distributor hole' at the time the distributor was out.
This couldn't have happened as I had over 10,000 miles on the
cam, before any failures occured. After the first distributor gear
failed and I changed it, the second one only lasted 700 miles.
The third one lasted 4 runs (land speed racing at Maxton) and
failed, I trailered the ranchero home (first and only time on a trailer)
I pulled the cam and installed a new cam and gear and have had
no problems since. So 'whats the cause' I am not an engineer
but if I was a betting man I would say the gear on the cam was at
fault. That's my 2 cents worth. Paul.

Wade Cams website:REFERENCE: FALCON DISTRIBUTOR GEAR WEAR

It is most important to check the mesh between the Distributor and Camshaft gear
when installing a new Billet Camshaft in the Ford cross-flow six cylinder engine.

The distributor drive misalignment problems with the Falcon engines appear to be predominantly
with the XE and XF models. It has been brought to our attention that there was a batch of engine blocks
machined incorrectly. This problem occurred prior to Ford Motor Company purchasing a multi axis checking machine.

Ford had made a modification to the distributor drive gear on the camshaft which helped alleviate the problem.

All new Billet Cams now have gears which are closer to the modified Ford design. This has reduced the incidence in cam wear.

Well thats wade cams excuse.
