Hi guys, this problem pops up every now and then (usually when people are staring at me when I pull up so it's not only irritating it's sometimes embarassing), I park the car and it rumbles on for a bit before it acutally dies. Alot of complaining and shaking then it just stops. This doesn't happen all the time. Where should I start looking?

Tis called "Run-On" and is usually the result of timing being off and RPM's being too high....
 
.....And an ignition source, usually a glowing piece of carbon in the chamber. Use something to clean the combustion chambers.
 
check vaccuum lines for a leak. Mine did that when one of the lines blew off...but it did it everytime.
 
I have access to a timing light so I'll be checking the timing, as soon as I figure out how to use the darn thing.

Can somebody post a pic or two showing me where my vaccuum lines are and where they should be leading to?

Pics sent by e-mail. Idle speed set too high can also cause run-on or dieseling. One way to blow out the carbon is to take the car out on the interstate for a high speed run regularly. :D
 
There are a few things that can cause "dieseling"

Too much timing, try backing off a little.
Idle is set too high.
Running a little rich.
A carbon buildup.

Try quirting a little water down your carb to clean out any carbon deposits. It will try to die but just rev it a little to keep it running. Use a spray bottle and give it a couple of squirts but DO NOT USE TOO MUCH WATER.

You can also turn off your ignition with the car in Drive. This will prevent the car from dieseling if all else fails :wink:
 
My father in law dropped off his timing light for me to use, as well as a vaccuum gauge, I don't have a clue how to use either of them can anybody offer some help, I've attached images of the items below.

I tried to get as much detail in the images as possible, what you can't see in the image of the timing light (but you're probably already aware of) is a small clamp on the end of the blue wire, where the *@#$! does that go? And what do I shoot with the light?
 
The clamp you're describing clips into the #1 spark plug wire.
By the looks of this, it needs to be in direct contact with the spark wire.
Dont puncture the insulation on the wire to do this; there is another way, but I don't know what.

I personally recommend an inductive style timing light.

As with any timing light, look for timing marks on the crankshaft pulley, and point the light at that.
 
The timing light will not do you much good if you have no marks on your balancer.

Can I safely roll back the rubber insulation covering the connection between plug #1 and the wire that's attached to make my connection? The least expensive light I've found is a 100 bucks I don't don't have that lying around at the moment.

Welcome, we have enough car guys trying the web thing. You'll become a real gearhead before I'll understand how to set up and manage a web page. :wink:

I don't know how much they are in Canada, but you can usually find an inductive timing light for about $40-50 US. It is well worth the money. I use mine about every other week, so buying a nice one is worth it. Get one with a dial back light.

Didn't the older style timing lights use a tightly wound spring between the spark plig and the plug boot, and the light (blue wire) clipped to that? I'm trying to remember hoe we used my dad's old stuff.

If you do choose to get a newer light, step up to the bar and get a dial-back. Least expensive way to get some feel for the timing curce your distributor has
 
Ok, the wife spent $100.00 on ink this morning so I got me a brand new inductive timing light, a new 13lb rad cap, 180 degree thermostat, water pump gasket and some goop for the new gasket. :D

Out side of new hoses, radiator, and water pump I should be able to solve the heat problem and get my timing setup.

If I remember from previous posts I'm looking for marks down in the front of the engine correct? What am I to be setting my timing to for a start?
