Duraspark Distributor & Cap - what am I missing here?

I ordered a duraspark dizzy from Kragen for a 70 something Torino (I think, following advice here).

This is what I got... looks like there is something missing that bolts onto the body of the dizzy that fits between it & the cap... what do I need??

Can I get whatever it is from the store or alternatively does anyone have one?

Also I measured this up against the old "loadamatic" dizzy. The allen shaft is the right diameter & critical dimensions (marked on the box as shown here) is the same but the very end shaft from the gear down is about 1/8" longer... is there enough room in the block for that extra length??

Engine is a 67 200ci block mounted to a 69 head.

Thanks for the help.

yup, you're missing the adapter thingie
basically it's a plastic ring that screws to the dizzy, and you should easily be able to find it where ever you got your dizzy and such

as for the length, i wouldn't think you'd have any problems, i didn't when i installed mine

Here's the cap adapter:

Got the photo from here:

Do you have a rotor?

Yes thanks, got a new rotor. Guess the monkey on the other side of the counter didn't think to give me the adapter! Oh well... I'll try again or try a different shop.

Thanks again for the info.

By the way... anyone know if all the 200ci water pumps are common? Mine is weeping (at the gasket I think) so if I'm going to take it off I may as well put a new one in... may even put a new thermostat in whilst I'm at it... what temp T-stat should I use for Los Angeles (I live by the coast, temp generally 60-90 degrees with the off foray up or down by another 10).

Dan :)

180º is a very good compromise. Generally speaking, a hotter thermostat will improve economy and a cooler stat will help top speed performance.

160º is pretty low and 200º is fairly high. I run a 205º stat in my 300; no problems at 100º ambient temps.

Howdy bck Dan and All:

Water pumps are One-size-fits-all as far as bolting on. THe differences are in the shaft length. Early are short, Later are long. Another difference is in the impellers. Early pumps used a cast iron impeller while later ones have a stamped steel. And finally, there is a difference between AC and Non-AC water pump impellers.

So, you need to decide- do you want new or rebuilt? Long or short shaft? AC or Non-AC?

Rebuilt are a little cheaper. If you want the old style cast iron impeller ask for a rebuilt, but you may have to open the boxes of a few to find the right one. Rebuilts will be whatever. AC type moves a greater volume of water, but take a few more HP to do it. If you don't need the extra cooling skip the AC type.

IF you go to the parts house and ask for a water pump for a '67 200, Non/AC you should be just fine.

As far as the thermostat a 180 to 195 will do just fine depending on what kind of driving you do and the climate you do it in.

Adios, David

I'd go back to the parts house where you got it and tell them to give you the rest of your stuff, namely the adaptor. Get the short snout water pump. You'll have more room for an electric fan. 180* T-stat will be fine where you live.

The adapter will cost you an extra $10 or so.
If it has to be back-ordered, you could probably get one from rockauto.com faster. Or a junkyard.

i would say that he got all of his parts, he probably only asked for a dizzy, cap, and rotor, possibly a DSII control module (or a GM HEI)
it's a legitimate seperate part, it's non-wearable so it's not something that would ever really get replaced unless it was damaged
what it is is an oversight that's fairly common, i did it, i'd wager a lot of other folks did too, shoot on the Tech section covering the DSII swap it's never mentioned

what are you using to trigger the ignition?

Ok, will go for a 180 T stat, will likely pull it & the pump off & then go searching.... There's Kragen, Autozone & Napa in striking distance of here so I shouldn't have too many probs.

Are the cast impeller's better than the steel ones?

Going to flush the raditator & fit a 16" electric fan in place of the stocker (no good here in the summer).

The guy in the shop knew I was doing a conversion but it's an easy oversight not to give me the adapter... no big deal :)

Going to fire the ignition with a GM module (got a huge heatsink to put on it too) & a MSD E coil (picked one up pretty cheap on Amazon of all places).

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Howdy Back Dan:

"Are the cast impeller's better than the steel ones?"

Some people prefer them. I've not been able to tell any differences. Anybody else?

You probably should have started another post on water pumps and thermostats to get the best response.

Adios, David

Thanks David, I have enough info now I think, all I have to do now is actually get it done....

New engine mounts, new manifold to exhaust gasket, new clutch spring fitted yesterday :)

Here's the car (minus rear hubcaps at that stage) for context / interest.

Dan :)

Well water pump is in, fitted new T stat housing & a 180 T stat at the same time. Derale curved blade fan fitted to the front of the radiator with a post type "push through the fins" thermo switch & a fan.

All working great. Took switching power from one of the posts on the solenoid that's only hot in run.

It was hot last night when I went for the test run but seems to be performing well so far. Need a really hot day (like today...) to test it properly but I'm riding one of the bikes today!

Next up to fit the Duraspark & GM module followed by looking into fitting the Autolite 1100 (to replace the Holley I have on there now as it has a spark port).

Dan :)

Ive been reading up on this upgrade alot, trying to figure out everything that needs to be done before I jump into it. I was curious, what's the difference between an autozone DSII and the CI version. From other posts I've gathered that the install can be completed for about $150 from autozone, yet the CI price for the kit to do so is $400. Am I missing something?

Yes Classis Inlines. After looking a second time, it does say DUI. But its listed as "DUI Duraspark II Distributor kit". Is this just a DUI version of the DSII?

i believe it does have a DUI module included

i get to Duke Field once a month for the reserves, how long you been stationed at Hurlburt?

Ive only been here for about 2 months. Unfortunately, the mustang is still in kentucky, hoping to have it here within the next month though.
