Hi, to answer your question, the early 144, 170, and 200 blocks were drilled for the small bell housings, whether the car had a 3 speed or an automatic tranny. By 1966, the engines were able to fit the small (C4) bell housings, and the larger bell housings for the mighty 9" clutch, used with the new 3.03 3 speed. This was made possible by drilling for both bell housing patterns. Good luck
