Hey everybody, I have a feeling my torque converter is busted. If it is, I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get a new torque converter for my 200 inline 6 1968 mustang. Looks like my torque converter has a flywheel built into it, is there an option to get these separate or do they always come together for my engine and year type. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you.

What do you feel is busted about it, the starter ring gear ground down? Yes, that ring gear is welded to the torque converter on the 200. There is a small flex plate without a ring gear that is also used, and these are known to crack and break in place sometimes too, if you are experiencing vibration, noise, and screeching/scraping sounds. You can still buy the flex plates new, I think you have to go with remanufactured on the converter.

Just saw your other thread on this- if your rebuilt engine is checking out OK then I think the flex plate is a prime candidate for all the symptoms you are describing, I’ve had it happen on 2 or 3 cars with the 200 over the years and it’s exactly as you describe. If that’s it, good news is it’s a less than $20 part from Rock Auto, bad news is you have to pull the trans to change it.

Unless I am wrong, and please tell me if I am, only manuals have flex plates while automatics have flywheels.

So your saying that I would have to find a manufactured flywheel/ torque converter combo?

No, A manual has a flywheel and the Auto has a flex plate and on a 200 the ring gear is part of the torque converter . On a 200 there is a flex plate with a reinforcer ring that goes under the crank bolts then the flex plate and then the torque converter bolts to flex plate.

I had my torque converter rebuild by "Whatever it takes". They only do stock units I think. They have every part you could want to rebuild a stock transmission.

I actually found this site called west coast classic cougar and they have a rebuilt c4 24 spline torque converter for sale that would fit my mustang. Now the only thing is finding a new flexplate with a gear ring and the nuts for installation. I think the flex plate is easy to find, but do you guys have any recommendations?

You can go to https://champconverters.com/ or call them up. They can rebuild your current one.
