Easy, beginner questions

I'm a n00b so excuse the questions. I recently purchased a new (to me) 250 I6 for my 63 and an engine mount to work on it with. When mounting the engine I'm assuming it's best to remove the flex plate and to do that I just need to remove the 5 bolts holding it in. Secondly what size bolts should I be using to hold the engine and where are the best points to mount it? TIA for any help

Use the same size bolts that hold the bellhousing to the engine, and they go into the bellhousing mounting flange.

Sorry if this is obvious, but since you said you are a noob, I'll post it anyways:

Remove the flex plate from the engine before mounting to the engine stand.

In the picture above, you can see where I connect the engine to the stand. I don't remember the bolt size. Do you have the bolts that were used to keep the bell housing bolted to the engine block? If so, take one of these with you to the hardware store and just get a longer version of it that will go through the mount and into the block.

I don't remember the size, but they aren't metric!

Also, get some washers. I ended up with bolts too long and used washers to fill the gap on the mount.

Bolts for a 302 are 7/16" 14x1". I am not sure if they are that size, though, I remember them to be 3/8", maybe a 16 pitch.

Just take one out, take it to the hardware store and see which nut fits it. Then buy them in a long enough length, usually 3". As long as they are threaded all the way, the length shouldn't really matter.
