EFI motor put on straight gas and no computer??

whats involved in an EFI motor getting converted to straight gas? Anyone have an idea on how much it will cost to get gas setup and with most EFI systems handling the ignition side of things aswell, can i simply use a stand alone MSD or CRANE ignition system?

Basically, if i buy an EFI motor without computer etc, is it just as easy to fit gas and another ignition system to get it running?

You should be able to do this, just set the efi (OHC?) with a LPG mixer and convertor , use the EFI intake that fits best or the early EA single point setup.
As to ignition there should be some way of getting a pre EFI dizzy into the hole and just working out an electronic system with the right advance curve.
Sling all the injection stuff, plug the injector holes if you decide to go with that type of manifold.
What car do you intend to fit this engine to?

im not fittin an EA-EL 6... i got other plans.... all the planning has been working out well tho, but it came down to the gas setup now and getting the thing to fire.... and is sorta all on the backburner whilst i buy my house but now is the time to plan for it i reakon

i cant see y i cant turf the factory computer and adapt a MSD or CRANE ignition to the factory electronic dizzy... in theroy in my head it seems to work and cant see y it cant.

Going to prob talk to an EFI bloke i know and see what he says, i talked to the mechanic yesterday and he had his umm's and arrr's but in the end couldnt really see y it couldnt either.

In the AU's that were LPG only, what computer system did they run?? or taxi's for that matter?

The Gasresearch carb bolts straight onto the XE-XF EFI intake (or so I have been told), if that helps at all. Then just run an XE style distributor curved to suit.

well my plans have hit a brick wall, rang around and even if i fit gas, i still need the computer for all the sensors etc and it makes things difficult again cause of the gas.... so now i basically gotta run with the factory computer and EFI, or, go back to old school of carbs and cams :)

It would be a whole heap easier, and therefore cheaper, to just do a 351C swap. (btw, just my opinion  )

yer prob right fingers.... easily do the driveline swap in a good weekends work if planned out correctly....looked at prices for a complete 351c, for a complete engine, carby to sump from Ford Muscle Parts, looking at around $6000 for a 370hp package

As the saying goes, speed costs money, how fast do you wanna spend?!

with all bobs engines you get a full 12month warrenty, even if you race it! sounds crazy but if you build an engine properly you wont have many hassells.
After going in my mates XC with one of bobs hot motors in it, he does build a VERY VERY good engine and has not given my mate 1 ounce of trouble, but my mates engine was $15000.... little bit out of my beer budget, hmmmm, beeeer, beeer is goooood

Add Genie headers, proper exhast, shifter, better pistons, head work and modifications to go past the 300 hp, engineers cert, and add inflationary costs of items, and I can't see how you can do it for less than 10 large at todays prices.

15 grand sounds just right.

I have a large amount of V8 Falcon buddies, and everyone who has taken short cuts has ended up going belly up before getting even an unrealiable 300 hp flywheel combo.

no matter which way i go, its gunna be expensive

I dont know about bobs engines in the past but what ive seen from my mates engine i find the price resonable for the 370hp combo and my mates being an almost 500hp engine its super reliable and he can get in it and drive to the shops or take it to the track and he has no worries at all, may chew the fuel when you open her up but you dont build a 500hp engine for fuel econonmy hehe..... check out the 370hp combo at

also been onto dellow about a Tremec TR3550 box, $3500 + $495 for the bellhousing, rest is Ford toploader stuff...

Yeh, ill admit $15g could be gone in a day, but id rather spend 15g on my xa then spend $40g on a new falcon or commodore and 2yrs later its only worth 20g..... You do the sums

Not planning on doing anything by halves, done that b4 and been burnt....
Again, it is an expensive excercise, playing cars as our hobby we all know its an expencive one compared to oregami but its about our love for cars, not the money

That is the reason there will always be people like us learning everything about old Fords.

When you factor in depreciation, redoing an old car with a great engine and keeping it is the way.

I delight in the new cars. They are hot. But reworking an old machine is great if you do the sums.

My first ride of a decent XY 351 got me hooked. My mate Blair followed Bob Pinnels 375 hp 357 rebuild. It was just a Strip Dominator intaked 2V 302 headed +30 Clevo with a Crower cam.

The car did 16 mpg around town, sub 14 second quarters, 20 mpg on the open road with a Toploader and 2.92:1 BW diff.

8 months, 8 grand New Zealand in 1988, and then 8 weeks later, the NASCAR block got pulled because the bores weren't sized for the TRW forged pistons. He rebuilt it with a stock Aussie 302C block, and ran it as mine manager at Wihi until it got stollen in 1997.

To me, a propane 4.1 sounds great becasue my LPG Falcon was the nicest thing around. Cheap, utterly reliable, and if anything broke, it could be replaced by the engine found in 80% of every Falcon ever made.

I'm not knocking V8's, but if your gonna get one, don't be afraid to spend.

Bob Pinnell felt, way back in 88, that the best bang for the buck was the 460.

I agree. The big block isn't much heavier than the Aussie Clevleand block, and on propane, it would last for ever.

My mate has an FE 390 in his 4x4 80 series chassied Land Rover. On propane, it was a delight. Big blocks are more expensive to do in NZ and Aussie, but they hold there value, and are always wanted for boats and drag cars. 8.8 " diffs and good autos are still around for them. You can't loose!

Be a good steward of the resources of the earth, and make certain any engine you build is still driving around in 20 years time!

XTAXI, hit the nail on the head basically.... like you said, new cars are hot... i was drooling over a brand new silver BA GT-P last night thinking of that lotto win that i never seem to get and how id spend the cash, but then in the back of my mind i kept coming back to the old girl and thinking of wilder things i could do to her for that sorta cash for the GT

What i really want to do with my XA is oneday give it to my 2yr old daughter, ive had the car as long as she has been born and basically her and the car are like cheech and chong and she absolutly loves riding around in it and she is gunna be a little petrolhead just like her oldman, and her mother hates it!!!!!

I must agree with you that the old 250's are SUPER reliable.... mine even ran with the wrong power valve in the stromberg!
But i really want to keep with the muscle car theme, have the rumbly V8. Yeh, again as ive said, its gunna be mega $$$ no matter which way i go, but one thing is for certain, i would really like to fit straight gas to the new engine, im going to talk to Ford Muscle Parts and see what bob says about his engines running on straight gas.

Why straight gas you say?? Basically, premium unleaded here was $1.35 a litre with LPG only nudging .46c!! I know you dont build a big motor for fuel economy but $1.35 is hard on anyones pocket! esesually when 15mpg maybe a pipe dream!

As for the 460, yeh i thought about them too..... mega torque!! They do take a lil bit of warming to get em going good and for the $$$ id still prefer the clevo..... now a 427, hmmm that would be nice but again, for the $$$ the well sorted clevo is still looking good

Turbo the 250? yeh thought that too and all came down to the $$$ again and would i get what i wanted? Ok ive seen over 400hp turbo'd 250's but they must be a dog to drive with the power comming on and the torque would be insane!

Either way i go its a long way off, and who knows ill prob have something change my mind, i got all the dreams and intentions, just havent got the goods of the time and money right now hehe, such is life.
