EGR System for Better MPG?

In line with trying to get as much efficiency out of my 200 as possible; would an egr system have much impact? I know the purpose of the egr system is to lower combustion temps and drop the a/f ratio. Taking that into account, wouldn't one then be able to lean the a/f back up and possibly pick up a few points on the highway? There would be a loss in performance, but I can live with that., my goal is to build the most efficient 200.

I think it could help if you could control it (and the rest of the system) properly. Problem is that since most (non factory) people dont understand them they dont use them so there is not much support. Even the current Megasquirt does not have anything built in at this time. I started out with mine hooked up but it was causing some drivability issues in some areas because it was not being controlled by the computer. Steady cruise was fine. When I unhooked it I had to add A LOT of fuel in the steady cruise areas to get it back to 14.7-15:1 AFR. After I get some of the other bugs worked out of the system and learn more of the details about MS I plan to revisit the issue and see if I can find a way to get it to work. With a little luck someone else will have figured it out and wrote the software to do it.

IIRC, when the system has been engineered and tested with EGR, it makes some difference. If you're winging it, you're probably in for some sleepless nights. You'd need to invest in an engine dyno and a whole bunch of extra engines. Did I mention a lab, and a road test circuit?

I have read some evidence from knowledgeable folks over at www.speedtalk.com that EGR can help both economy AND power but it isn't a gimmee as it does need to be controlled properly. Apparently it may give benefit similar to water injection.

It would be fairly easy to install if you have the parts.
The Holley 1946 is intended, IIRC, to work well with EGR, so I have left my setup intact, and I have OK gas mileage and good power. Nothing empirical to offer, although I did get about 28mpg on the highway once, (tailgating a speeding semi @ 80mph!)
