hey guys so i have a 64 comet with a 200 in it i wanna take out the old points it has to put electronic ignition what do i need and were can i find the parts needed to convert it over from points

First you would need to say which system you want to use. Pertronix, DUI, or a Dura Spark II or?

Howdy Back:

Are you planning on doing a PetroniX Ignitor conversion? or are you going to upgrade to a Dura Spark II system?

In either case you will need to ID your distributor by year and type. If it is OEM from a '64 200 you will need to determine the Block code. Again if it is OEM it will either be a C4XX or C5XX casting. C4 will have a smaller hole distributor access, while the C5 will have a larger. Also note the shape of the top of the distributor shaft where the rotor fits on to it.

The Petronix is likely cheaper and easier. All you will need is in the box. If you have the earlier block the Petronix is your only inexpensive option.

Happy Halloween.

Adios, David

The cheapest way to put a NEW electronic system is to put in a Pertronix and you will have the benefit of electronic ignition in less than half an hour. Pertronix I (one) seems to be the most reliable of the systems although my Pertronix II system has been absolutely reliable.

The way a lot of guys go here is the FoMoCo Dura-Spark II system with separate rotor, cap and ignition box. These can be had over the counter new at a parts store. One of the later Ford models is the one you want to get. OTOH, you can salvage a system from the junkyard for $25 to $50 and it will generally work fine. Do a search here for DS II or Dura-Spark II and you will get a lot of info.

Mike at Classic Inlines sells the ultimate in EI: the dedicated DUI rotor/cap/ignitor all in one. You can read all about it on the Classics Inline website.

8) the pertronix ignitor, and others like it, come as a complete kit that replaces your points and condenser. you need to supply very little, perhaps a connector or two, and few tools, and some time.

the next step up is a duraspark distributor and ignition box. there are kits available for this conversion as well, again some tools and a little of your time, and perhaps a few connectors. this one does take more time as everything is not self contained.

after that you have the DUI system. this is completely self contained, and takes the least amount of time to install, but you will have the expense of buying the system, as it is the most expensive.

Sounds like you need it tonight... if so I don't know how to help you..

If you go with Pertronix you can save a lot of headaches if you call Pertronix Technical Support: (909) 547-9058 FIRST: Give them the information they ask for and you will get the right part number.
They are in Cal-E-Forn-Ya..

You will need year, make, model, engine size
AND
If your distributor shaft is a D or C.

In the 2 pix you can see what the pertronix looks like and see mine is a D shaft..
You might try this for ordering.

I put one on my 47 Ford flat head 6 about 10 years ago. After about 6 months the green tape came off. I called petronix and they sent me a replacement the next day. No questions asked other than my mailing address.

I put one on my 65 Mustang 200 6 about 10 years ago as well and never had a problem at all. You are looking at it in the picture… Ran grrrrreat.. About $70 bucks as i recall.
Simple and fast install.. Well worth it..

Good Luck..

Actually you should be able to get it from any speed shop in your neck of the woods.. Cant say it would be any faster.. But for peat sake don’t go in and take their word on witch one you need.

Call pertronix FIRST:

hey hey com’n… its Halloween …………
