Okay, someone recentely put up things i should do since i'm going to rebuild the 200ci... i bought the book "The Ford Falcon Six Cylinder Performance Handbook" and I was on the "Ignition" part of the book and I read "FoMoCo added it's pointless, electronic ignition system 'DuraSpark II' to all its sixes beginning in 1976" .. So okay, I was wondering .. since that person told me to get an eletronic iginition system ... and the book says its pointless .. should i get it? Or am I misreading the handbook? or wat.. ?

Now that I've stopped giggling, I'll reply.

What they meant by 'pointless' is that the electronic ignition that Ford )and everyone else) used, had/has a distributor that used an electronic pulse, rather than a contact point type of system to trigger ignition events.

Points had a need for frequent adjustment, as compared to electronic distributors. They also needed more frequent replacement of internal parts.

So it woudln't be pointless to upgrading to an eletronic iginition systeM? Cuz right now my car is all stock, 1967. So im sure it doesn't have that? .. Would it be a wise choice?

it most definetely would not be pointless
easier starting, smoother revving, better MPG
virtually no negatives to this upgrade

go for it, it'd be a good improvement

DANG that is the funniest thing of read in SO long! I'm not laughing at you...rather with you along with everyone else!  Maybe they should have said "Points-less" for clarification.

Being a relative amateur myself, I'm allowed because Lord knows I've said and done some pretty "funny" stuff as well!

I added a DSII from a '79 Fairmont along with the MSD6 ignition module. Great stuff. I'm about to change the springs in the DSII to give me better advance curve, so you may find a need for that as well depending on your build up.

Howdy 67 FM and all:

I guess we should have said that pointless in this case means "without points". Maybe I should buy my shoes a size or two too large, to improve my understanding. Or should I say "under-standing"? Get it???

This is just too much fun!

Adios, David

i laughed aloud at work...where there is no laughing...allowed

Laughing ist VERBOTEN! Chaz- go to ze Box.

Warning- look up the issues with the Load-o-matic dizzy as it relates to your ignition upgrade. Your carb may not be compatible with the DSII. I''ve got dizzy ready to go in, but am waiting until I replace the carb.

if I laugh...they go..."whats HE doing? Havng fun...? hmmm"

and come check to see if I am surfing around or what....

and then usually give me more work. I like flying under the radar

Joking aside, all spark ignition systems are "electronic". They harness the flow of 'electrons' to do work (light a fire) by using a transformer to step the voltage up to a suitable level. The older sytems used points to accomplish the triggering, the newer systems use various methods and have generically come to be known as "electronic" ignition, which most of us understand to be 'sans points'. There are few good reasons to stay with a breaker point ignition unless you are a stubborn old codger like me. But then I still drive work horses too :P Most whippersnappers have no idea how to properly maintain an older ignition and will be much better off with the so-called "electronic" setup. But if you wish to enjoy the pleasure of not merely driving but actually maintaining a true vintage automobile.... 8)

If you actually get down this far in the posts.....go out and buy a Pertronix 1 and Flamethrower coil. You will remove your old points system...install the pertronix...hook up a wire or two...buy a new cap and rotor and off yu go. No more attention needed other then setting timing and changing plugs!

I swear...sometimes these guys have NOS nozzles attached where the web cam is supposed to go!!!!

ANY electronic ignition is better off then the points!

Pertronix/DS2...doesn't matter. THey perform about the same. THe only difference is availability when things break in the middle of the night. Instead of waiting for a few days for the Fedex guy, with DS2 I can go to Autozone/Napa/Pep Boys etc, and get replacement parts.

Just as a key note (my fault by all means), don't put too much grease on the distributor cam, the excess will sling onto the points...by what I mean is one will not have any spark to the plugs, thus a non-running engine. Like they say, "just a dab will do it."

okay, another dilema. I have no cash for the electronic ignition ... but okay. so i get 20.00 a week allowance (and im not allowed to get a job .. sigh) so thats 80.00 a month ... what is the best but yet cheapest (in price of course) for the eletric ignition (counting all the other parts im gonna need to install it)

Hehe, of course .. im mostly on this site in computer programming class, i try to read as much as i can within an hour. then wen i get home, i check the posts and again .. i learn so much each day, thanks every1

but also, how much is the Pertronix 1 and a flamethrower coil gonna cost me?

They run about the same price, but nice think about pertronix is that you can do it in stages. You can replace the points one month, the wires the next month, and then the coil.

Howdy All:

Or '67 Ford Mustang, you can make a trip to your local recycle yard and and get the whole system for about $40. I usually look for late 70's Fairmonts and Zephyrs. That's the most I've ever had to pay and that got me the complete distributor, plug wires and spark plugs, the coil, Module and wiring harness. A complete matched system.

I cleaned it up (probably the worst part of the deal) and installed it. Set the timing at 16 BTC (I'm at 5,000 ft elevation). That was about 2 years ago and it's still going strong. Oops, I have put in new plugs since.

If you want to retain an original appearance then the PetroniX Ignitor is the way to go. In either case an ignition upgrade may be the very best, single thing you can do, $ for $, to improve your engines function.

I'm just a poor retired school teacher trying to get by on my pension, so I know what you're up against.

Keep learning!

Ok, so you spend all your money on parts then what do you have left for gas? Just keep the points and learn how to maintain them. A stock Ford six will give.....SURPRISE! ..... stock performance with the original breaker point system. And a third class ride beats a first class walk EVERY time. I have proven that two sets of points can easily be used in excess of 50,000 miles in my Volkswagen by carefully filing them with a little diamond knife sharpening hone that I bought for five bucks. So you have to pull them out and clean them up every 6-8000 miles. So what? And it will be a great learning experience. When you have more cash, go for the DS2.
