Emergency Gasket Making

I just bought new gasket sets, had to call three parts stores,
but was wondering........

If an emergency arose that a gasket had to be special
ordered and would take 3-4 days, but you needed back
on the road in 1 day, would it be possible to make your
own gaskets :

Maybe just for valve cover or oil pan or timing cover?

I guess you could probably get gasket material and trace
and cut. But what about out of cardboard, poster board,
thin craft foam (maybe heat problem), etc ?

You could use many of the RTV sealers in a tube. Or you could cut one from gasket material

The aerosol cans of gasket maker, at least the Permatex brank (think it's call The Right Stuff????), is good stuff. It's quick and easy too.

u can buy faily large sheets of gasket material so u can make your on gaskets...i have a pack of various material..only about normal paper size, but u can get quite long sheets of it...i made my own carb gasket from it...works awesome and is a very good price.

thats the usual way.
with thin gasket paper and a good printer, you could do a true 1:1 -scan and print directly on the gasket paper.

on thicker, heavy gage gasket paper, put the original gasket on the paper and spray some paint to outline the gasket.

if you´re completely out of any proper gasket material (like after breaking down in the middle of nowhere), you can use the cardboard from milk cartons. Suitable for timing covers, oil pump, carb base and spacer.

when gasoline-resistant gasket material is needed, get yourself some sheet of acrylic nitrile-butadiene rubber. Perfect for gas cap gaskets and the fuel bowl gasket of RBS-1bbl carb. Anyway, that rubber polymer is not recommended for high heat applications exceeding 200°F.

yeah...when working on 40 year old marine engines...we have to make our own gaskets. Pretty easy. Invest in some good cutting tools.
