Engine lifting question

I am planning to install my newly rebuilt engine (minus the head) with the transmission attached back in the 'stang this weekend. I am waiting on a port divider for the head so it won't be on. My question is if it would be ok to use a couple (or maybe four) head bolt holes to lift the engine or should I stay with the holes in the side of the block? Those head bolt holes would be mighty handy.

They will work fine, but try to engage at least double the bolt diameter in thread depth. Use Grade 8 (high tensile) bolts if at all possible, and spread the load as evenly as you can. Take your time and enjoy the whole deal.

Since your head is removed, are you getting new head bolts? If so, do what I did and just use the old head bolts. I put them down until they bottomed out, and then backed off about 2 turns.

If doing the engine and tranny together, I used a load leveler and put the bolts in the 2nd or 3rd set of holes from the front, and put the other pair on the rear most bolt holes. I used 4 bolts, since that is what the load leveler had brackets for.

my 250 has 1 bracket bolted to the block in the front but the back one was bolted to the head , I had the head off my engin when I pulled it (thats ~50 lbs and I didn`t want to push my luck with one 2 X 6 holding every thing up )so one end of my load leveler was chained to the front bracket and on the the other end I had the chain bolted to the block with one of the bellhousing bolts and a big thick washer
