OK, I feel like a dork, but I just brought home my rebuilt motor, and was given a universal engine stand a few weeks back, but I really can't figure out how to attach the engine....

My stand looks just like the one on this web page
http://www.robbsclassics.org/ac.html
I also found this picture on the clifford site, that has a picture of a mounted engine on a stand....looks like some spacers? What gives?
http://www.cliffordperformance.com/Ford_Pics.htm

There are slots for four bolts, but the threaded holes on the transmission side of the engine are pretty small, and I am not sure those are going to take the weight of the motor. Here are the questions....

*will four bolts hold a straight six 200?
*do I need to use any type of special bolt?
*for the tapped holes into the block, how much should I torque those bolts?
*how long should the bolts that go into the tapped holes be? (so that I don't bottom them out and break them off)

Sorry for the bone-headed questions but I don't want to screw anything up.

if you have the bolts that connect the bellhousing to the engine, ive alwasy heard people say to use those. i didnt have those, so i got my friends dad to pick me up a bunch of if i can remember, 5/8" bolts of different legnths and used those, nothings fallen and its been up for about 3 months. just make sure the bolts are heat treated, or something similar to make sure theyre strong.

The four bolts for the tranny are what you want...

it amazes me what actually holds. but they will...

when I had to drop the engine I ended up using some pretty small connections, but the bolts are hardened and it holds nicely... even though I was nervous about it...

but the four tranny bolt holes are plenty...

think of this too, most of those stands will hold a V8 which weighs much more than the six!!!

Those 3-wheeled stands are pretty tippy when you put a long six on one. Be careful when wheeling it around. I had one fall over as I was moving it around the garage. I picked up a 4-wheeled stand for just a few bucks more that is much more user friendly.

Thanks for the help. I picked up some hardened bolts, and it all went together pretty easily. My motor is now sitting comfortably in my garage on the stand, covered and waiting to get in the Mustang.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the help you provide in these forums. For guys like myself, the support is invaluable!

I just used 4 grade 8 bolts & had no problems (both 170 & 300 sixes). The main thing you need to be sure of for an engine stand is the fact that an I6 is, well, long. Engine stands that can handle a big block V8 can't always handle an I6 due to the different center of gravity (imagine an I8!). I agree with MustangSix's suggestion for a 4 wheeled stand, the more stability the better. Just be carefull when you move the engine & stand around & you'll most likley be just fine. Take care,
Edwin
