im planning on goin with the clifford perf. header but not sure on the mufflers for a 200cid on 66 mustang. i want a mean throaty sound that u can only tell its a I6 by popping the hood. i heard turbo mufflers are good but what about glass packed mufflers?

hmm...

i can tell you how this thread is going to go:

someone is going to chime in and tell you to use the search function (bort  ) because "this topic has been beaten to death", then some other people will come in with their experiences and the final result will be with you settling on a set of turbo mufflers. and yeah turbos sound good; not as loud as glasspacks, but still throaty. look on youtube. im getting turbo mufflers with mine.

sorry if i sound condescending, but these threads usually end up bad because we get in a debate about single vs. dual and which mufflers sound best, when its really all about personal preference and nobody is going to change their mind.

I researched, asked for opinions, listened to a bunch of UTube videos and wound up more confused than when I started.
Finally I came across a how-to article from FSP Exhaust and liked the setup pix and content. So, I bought my dual outlet ceramic coated header from FordSix (perfect fit), 2-1/2" GT exhaust kit (no crossover pipe) and DuraMax Turbos from JEGS. Put it all together and she runs like a raped ape and sounds great! Stock 200 motor with DuraII and GM HEI module and H/W 5200 carb.
One problem, now with the extra power, the clutch REALLY slips when you put your foot into it.

That's the only thing keeping your 7 1/4" rear alive.

On a separate tangent. My choice was dictated in part by my use of the car. Consider that a quiet muffler won't be so quiet with headers. I take road trips, and sometimes drive 12-13 hour stints. A convertible is short on insulation, and too much of a good thing (exhaust noise) can get on your nerves after a while. Especially at high speed, in the rain (windows up), with the top up.

8) what i have pondered is using a dual outlet header going into a single turbo style muffler, probably the sonic turbo, then split the system back out to twin pipes with a dual outlet resonator at the end of the pipes out back. this would give a decent, yet fairly quiet, tone.

I can tell you this-i have the clifford duel outlet headers with turbo mufflers. It sound good at idle and routine driving, but on a long trip, the drone get tiring. I wouldn't want anything louder like glass paks.

I have Hooker header and Thrush side pipes, looks great and sounds good. I had turbo mufflers and the side pipes are not as loud as turbos were.

This sounds (pun intended...or not) like another "I-want-it-to-sound-like-something-it-isn't." post.

A is A or Anything is itself.... If it is an I6, it is an I6.
It is either A or not A.... It's either an I6 or not an I6.
It cannot be both A and not A.... It cannot be both an I6 and not an I6.

lol nice.

Not to mention that this guy has made the exact same post three times.

Just buy some headers from mike and throw whatever random performance muffler from summit on it, and you will probably be happy.

I've got Mike's dual out headers, 2 short pipes with a pair of Flowcan 40's exiting (with turndowns) in front of the rear axle.

Excrutiatingly Loud, Howls @ 3500 rpms cruisin down the road @ 60 mph and sounds like a 302.

Not for the faint of heart. :D

Later,

Doug

I just returned from the mufffffler shop.mike's dual out on a '66. cheap turbo's made by walker. it sounds good. the header dumps close to a frame support  so the system is less than perfect (cleanliness wise).

it does sounds good . 8)

Wait, does that mean it runs? lol

it goes... stopping is now the problem

I used a tow dolly to get the pipes done. the neighbors are nice, open headers can test them though

it will make it to the ice cream shop by sunday (and stop) 8)
