The nuts that hold the headpipe to the manifold keep loosening, what do I do?

ARP makes specially drilled header bolts to allow you to wire them to prevent loosening.

ARP stands for Automotive Racing Products. They are the premier manufacturer of high quality engine fasteners.

Steve, there are two products that I know of that would help you.

Mike at FSPP sells Breslin fasteners, which use a center set bolt that expands the threads of the outer bolt to lock the bolt in place.

The Mustang Shop sells Stage 8 fasteners, which uses an active mechanical locking device that positively prevents the fastener from rotating.

On my rebuild I'm using Breslins, but the Stage 8 fasteners look like a good solution as well. Hope this helps.

This is a stock exhaust manifold with studs, the problem is the nuts keep backing off, I was wondering if they made anything for this that wont back off? This is only temporary as I have just recieved my header but cant afford the rest of the exhaust right now.

Is there enough stud length to run another nut down it as a jam nut?
Well... YES there is. Why didnt I think of that. DUH!!!
Thanks WhitePony

I wrap my header bolts with plumbing teflon tape. Try it, it works. My header has been on for 2 years and it hasn't loosened yet.

HELLO 69STANG

.....FORD PUT A BRACKET ON THE PIPE THAT BOLTS TO THE BLOCK. IT IS ABOUT SEVEN INCHS BELOW THE MANIFOLD. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS BRACKET,...THEN THE WHOLE PIPE IS HANGING AND MOVING AROUND CAUSING THE NUTS TO COME LOOSE. THS BRACKET WAS THE WAY FORD STOPPED THE PROBLEM.

.....I'VE MADE MINE NOT COME LOOSE BY WELDING THE BGRACKET TO THE PIPE WHEN IT IS ALL BOLTEDUP TIGHT. THAT WAY THE BOLTS CAN FALL OFF BUT THE BRACKET STILL HOLD THE PIPE IN PLACE. UNBOLTING THE BRACKET AND THE TO NUT LETS IT COME OFF.

.....THREE BOLTS ARE BETTER THAN TWO!!!

.....IT WORKS FOR ME...HOPE IT WILL WORK FOR YOU.

LOTS OF LUCK....LOL

Thanks Leroy,
The problem is that the headpipe wont reach the bracket on the block, one question though, I have only one hanger on the whole exhaust and it is in the rear holding the tailpipe as I cant find any other place to put a hanger without drilling a hole in the car will the cause undo stress to the manifold? Also is there any other type of hanger that wont require a hole drilled in the bottom of the car or am I just being stupid and should I find a way to get it to the block mount?

will the cause undo stress to the manifold

Yes. It's probably the cause of your loose nut problem. The previous owner of my car only had one hanger on it too. The symptoms were the same. Nothing helped. Jam nuts, lockwashers, loctite, you name it. Then the manifold broke. Coincidence? Now I'm having lots of problems with the 'new to me' manifold leaking. :x Stupid donut... I did get the brace at the boneyard too. I've been sanding all day on the manifold so hopefully it works...

If you have a welder, you won't have to drill holes :D

My manifold holds the turbo (heavy) plus all of the downpipe....I have one hanger in the back also. No cracks yet....and my manifold gets red hot!!

The hanger usually comes off one of the bellhousing bolts - at least it does on my aussie falcon.

I was just wondering how much stomping on the gas and torqueing your engine over stresses out the exhaust components. I need new motor mounts, but my engine twists a little. And it's just stock. It would seems that a connector on the bell housing, (which I don't appear to have) would eliminate that at the block?

I blew the stock exhaust gasket and donut gasket constantly until I figured out that the bracket that Leroy mentioned was not being used. See if you can find a spacer to put in there or somethign so that you can clamp the pipe to that bracket. It makes a HUGE difference.

This is sooooo common. I have seen this many times-- my 62 was the same way -I had trouble finding a place for a hanger -finally put a big hose clamp around exhaust pipe and through existing holes in frame in the closest to engine spot i could find. not exactly 'Concurs' but it never came loose again. and a lot less noticeable than coat hangers on the shock tower and manifold  .
