exhaust performance questions

Does back pressure have a big effect on these motors? Sound and looks are not inportant to me as much as performance. I have a big cam, P&P head, Duraspark, and single out header. Is there a performance difference between the single verse dual headers? Thanks for the input, MIKE

Mike,

\You want the least amount of back pressure as possible for the best performance.

I'm running a dual out header, 2.25" pipes, cutouts for racing and Flowmaster 40 series for the street that dump out before the rear axle.

I usually pick up 2 tenths in the qtr by opening up the cutouts.

If I was running a performance built log head w/single out I would run at least a 2.5" pipe and muffler and if you were to decide to run an aluminum head I would run a 3" pipe and muffler if you are planning on all out performance in a single pipe.

Heres a pic of my dual out. It only takes a couple of minutes to uncork them at the track. Under $30 a piece from Summit Racing. For performance go with the mandrel bent pipe from Summit also. Thats what I did.

As far as the single vs dual I wouldnt think it would make that big of a differance as long as you ran the bigger diameter exhaust pipe so you wouldnt cause a restriction.

Later,

if your gonna run a single use a glasspack, the ones made by thrush dont cost too much. i got one on my 250 wth a 2 1/4 inch pipe.

Back when I was driving my 80 Mustang hatch with stock 200/c4 I had a glasspack muffler and it then split to dual tailpipes.

I actually got quite a few compliments on how it sounded and looked.
