Exhaust pipe band clamps

I am installing dual out exhaust and would like to know if any one has used the band type clamps for butt joints. I bought some from Summit and they came with some very sticky black tar.
Is this nessesary? If so where should it be applied? I would assume at the joint.
How has any one else used these?
I am almost done with my triple webber install. Will post pics soon. Looks awesome.

Used that type all the time at the ranch, mostly on dump trucks. They work fine but need to be checked occasionally to ensure that nothing is moving. The ones that I used never had any tar, maybe that would help keep things from vibrating loose...

I'd say use the tar and see what happens.

i've never had good luck with any kind of clamp for that purpose, the pipes tend to rattle loose.
preferable would be a welded joint or a flange joint with a gasket.
as for the black tar, i would expect it to burn off if applied anywhere hot.

Yea, I see these as a temporary conenction that will need to be checked. I mis spoke in calling it tar as it it more like rubber but I thought the same thing about it burning off or at least making a mess.
I think I will install without and go from there. Easier to add later if needed than remove.
I'll let you all know how it goes.
Any other input is always welcome.

Two comments on this thread:

For really good yet removable clamps, you can't beat the stainless steel "band clamps" often used in truck/bus applications. THey will conform to slightly different or curved pipes and can be opened up and re-used if you need them out of the way for other service.( I haven't found them smaller than 2") .

Snorked down properly (impact wrench tight!) the stainless conforms to the underlying pipe well. the goo , i believe just runs down the seam of the clamp

I suggest using the generic stainless flex pipes that help isolate the exhaust system from the movement of the engine and helps keep it from cracking and loosening (especially under torque twisting launches )
