Exhaust sizes?

Hey all, what's up?

Just got my new header in the mail from CI!! ....And broke up a head bolt in the block while taking off my ac. DAMN! At any rate, hope to get that taken care of soon and have my heads installed.

Here's my question: what size tailpipe/muffler should I use? I had originally thought about doing a Y-pipe into a 2" tailpipe, but now I'm not sure. I'm considering doing a true dual deal, but I'm not sure if that's overkill and would cost me low end torque. Here's what I'm basically asking. I'm looking for a deeper, throatier sound. I know it won't sound like a V8 but I don't want it to sound like a ricer with a fart can, or a weedeater. Do I go the dual route, or stick with single? What size tailpipe do I use? And regardless of going dual or single, do I use a Borla ProSX, or cherrybomb glasspacks? Thank yall!!

This is a vid of mine... cheap camera but gives a prettty good idea, i love how mine sounds, i did 2" from the pipes then up to 2.5" after the trans. no crossover pipe, just 2.5" to flowmaster 40's and out the back. No droning, actually gets pretty quiet at 55mph. I didnt lose any off the line torque actually feels like more, 10 seconds for 0-60.

Everybody says you'd never know its a six cylinder, ive had to prove it to people at car shows haha

Hope I helped, Lee

I did a set up thinking cyclone headers on my 200. They were paired into 3 into 1. Dual 2.5 collectors I think. Then "Y"ed them togeather very gradually into the passenger side of a factory Boss 302 exh system worked great.

It's what I have. Generic turbo mufflers, 2" exhaust. I can't say if I lost anything on the low end as I upgraded to the OZ250 head at the same time.

Problem I found with a dual exhaust 6, is that with any of the performance mufflers, the sound was nice at idle, but tinny in midrange. My favorite WOT sound honestly was from Flowmaster 50s, but the resonance they had at 1800-2400 RPM was just horrible. Maybe fixable with some resonators, but I decided to go generic turbo mufflers and have been happy.

But exhaust note is one of the very difficult personal decisions. Some people love the sound, some hate it. No one is right or wrong IMO.

This forum has a pretty good thread at "New exhaust on my son's '62...he aint happy..."
Try reading that for exhaust info esp re muffler selection, pipe sz (2, 2 1/4 came recommended)...

I agree w/my fellow Massaholic from Taxachusetts - personal opinion is quite individualistic, hard to explain/define and a vid is not like in person but MAY help.
