Is it necessary to incorporate an "h" or "x" pipe when plumbing a dual exhaust system (using headers with no "y" fitting)?

8) no it is not. on V8's they help the exhaust work better and quiter, but on a six they are of debatable value.

I haven't explored this at all, but I thought I'd chime in due to my experience with this on a Harley I had. I bought a 1999 Sportster and it came with the "scavanger" pipe that connects the two cylinders. It made a differance. In all the studies I read, removing it was a mistake unless you were more interested in a specific exhaust note rather than performance and efficiency. And remember , this was with only two cylinders.

It won't hurt you. Remember, the X-pipe is there to even the flow out between the two banks of cylinders, thus providing equal back pressure on each bank of cylinders. Just because we have 6 cylinders doesn't mean it won't help, but as rbohm says, now much it helps is debatable.
