Aluminum transfers heat, though. Phenolic does work well, but is pretty dang hard to cut. Countertops are a good place to find it, but check with the wife before cutting.
 
this spacer is made from marine plywood, it takes less than ten minutes to make one.

Its resistance against moisture and its sealing qualities can be further enhanced by soaking in ATF.
 
those spacers i made are from "Phenolic" it's pretty good stuff......very resistant to fuel and oil. it machines very easy and is it really hard/flat also.
it's kind of funny that i'm using spacers that don't transfer heat, and then plumbing hot water to warm the intakes on my 300.
