I picked up a 302 and AOD tranny for dirt cheap a while back with the intent of swapping out my 223. Working on the 223 lately has been a lot of fun, with the exception of my rear main leak that I can't seem to conquer.
I listed the 302 and AOD on Craigslist this afternoon and sold it tonight.
Now, I can direct my full attention back to the Inline 6. Question, a reputable local shop will remanufacture my 223 for about $1,100. This is a complete reman, including the head, and not a refurbish. I've looked online and the complete kits with pistons, cam, etc, run about that much alone - sometimes more at places like Kanter. This shop will even pick up the motor at my house and deliver it back when it is done.
So, should I go with the local shop or give it a go on my own? I've rebuilt a couple of 302's over the years, but have never done any major work on this 223. I was all set to do it myself until I got this local quote. They've been shipping a lot of 223's to the West Coast recently, too.
