few questions

Now that I have 3x1 offy setup in and running I have a few questions.

When I first started it I blocked the outer two carbs and fuel lines.
It ran a little rough which was expected with the cam I had 268/274 (110) with 1.6 roller rockers. It liked the center carb set a little bit on the rich side. The idle could be lowered to around 7k to 8k. When the outer two carbs where added to the mix and adjusted it ran great but I now can’t get the idle down below aprox 1200 rpm. All three idle adjust screws are all the way out and the carb plates are completely closed. I’m thinking that because of the cam setup it’s just sucking the air in. I’ve sprayed carb cleaner all around the base of the carbs and other places that may be a way for air to get in. I’ll get another can and give it a go. Maybe I missed a spot. I could live with that idle but it would be nice to it around 900 to 1k. Any Ideas?

Another question:
When idling I noticed a faint rattle coming fro the DUI distributor. I pulled the cap and rotor and I think I have located the source. The spring loaded advance arms seem to where the noise is coming from. If I give them a little tap they rattle around and make the same noise. Is this normal?

Thanks

gene im running the same basic setup as you are. i have about 150 miles on this build. I have not noticed a rattle in the dui when running, i will check to see how loose mine is when i get home.if you have not made a jet change the stock jets run lean and cause the engine to run rough. i started mine on one carb and it ran terrible very lopey and seemed to be very rich but the plug showed a lean condition. it smoothed out when i uncorked the outers and made the jet changes. I would double check the o-rings and gaskets under the offy. they seem to be the culprits on these setups.i can get mine to idle as low as 500 rpm before it stalls.also i could not see in your engine pics if you used the oil slinger with the double roller chain. several forum members have had clearence issues. i had a good 1/8" on mine but pulled the timing cover to change the cam timing shortly after break in and i was ate up. just thought i would pass that along.

I'm going to recheck all the seals. There must be a small leak somewhere.
As far as the slinger, I don't think there was one there when I took it apart. So now I have to take both ends apart to check things. Someone forgot to put sealent on the flywheel bolts.
Your slinger was chewed up? Did you replace it? I read a number of post and there seems to be as much talk about having one or not as whether to use a port divider or not. (now I did it)

I'm glad it's not a daily driver and I can now bring it in from the cold. They say practice makes perfect so it's time to check everything over. I just hope I'm done by the time the warm weather gets here.

i did'nt put sealer on the bolts either.no oil leaks yet but i plan on doing it when i pull the trans for a rebuild. the peened over part of the hindge pin on the chain started rubbing on the slinger. i did'nt put one back in , some of the newer 200 did'nt use an oil slinger, i understand because of improvements to the front seal materials.I checked the D.U.I. pulled the cap, tapped on it, everthing seems tight no rattles.

I started mine up just a little while ago and it was running just fine for about 5 mins then I got a load screeching noise from the front around the damper then it just went away. Did yours make any kind of noise when it did that damage?
Hopefully I'll get a chance to pull the cover this weekend.

I'll try to take some pics of what I was talking about with the DUI to.

Thanks for checking

no. if i would not have opened the timing cover i may have not found out till it caused major damage. on the other hand when i started it up the first time i had it in the garage. between the exhaust, electric fan and the smoke alarm wailing from the paint on the headers burning off  it might have made a little racket to begin with but i may have not noticed.

I found out what the high idle issue was. It seems that my new Webers have a few rough spots and the throttle plates are sticking and not completely closing. I now have a nice loopy idle around 800 rpm.

The rattle from the DUI has gone away but if I bump the idle back up to around 1400 or so it comes back. It has to be coming from the two mechanical advance arms.
That will show how much they can move up and down the pivot shaft. It looks like if they are in position partially open the each end isn’t touching anything they are pretty loose. So at low idle or at a higher rpm like above 2k I don’t hear any rattle but between about 1200-1800 I do.

Here are a few pics that I took that may show you what I talking about. This might all be normal but just checking.

I have Weber 34ICT as the outside carbs on my triple set up. I found that one will seal fine, and other will not. I can place my hand over the carb opening when engine is running and I can feel suction. In my set-up the car will not idle properly with the leaky end carb. I have a new throttle plate on order. I had to remove the Weber carbs and held them up to the light. One you can clearly see light coming around the throttle plate. So I have a new throttle plate on order. The leak is so large that I can't get the center carb to idle properly either.

Mugsy,

I don't know if you tried this but there is a little play in the throttle plates if you loosen up the screws. If you flip the carb over and loosen the screws that hold it and open and close the throttle it will center itself. You may have to do it a few times I did because it could shift when you retighten the screws. Another thing I did was to clean up the sharp edges the plates had with some 1200 grit paper. The edges seemed to cause the plate to hang up just before it closes completely.

Gene,

Thanks for the suggestion about the alignment; I've already tried that. I even took the throttle plate out and tried (very gently) to enlarge the bolt holes with a jeweler's file so it would line up and close air tight.

I like your idea about the edges though. The one that works does seem to hang up a little. Good suggestion.
