First start, not firing up...

FAN...FREAKIN...TASTIC

Car started. No smiles here. It ran EXCELLENT, although the idle speed was a little high. My friend lookin at the engine bay yells "KILL IT!" so I reach over and do it.

He says, "well now you have an even larger problem." as I notice the water gushing out between the block and the head.

So, tomorrow I'm going to try to pull everything back off, take off the head, remove the gasket, put in some studs into the block, put the new headgasket on, and retorque the head back on. All in a day's work, I hope.

And, as a sidestory, I called the builder of the engine. I'd be willing to bet he starts screening his calls and doesn't answer me again. Guy was a total jerk, and when I told him what happened, he said it wasn't his fault and he didn't do anything wrong, then hung up on me.

If you guys know the size of those headbolts, let me know, and I can pick up a few studs in the morning, rather than cutting the heads off the bolts. Anything else you got will help too. My fiancee's bridal shower is tomorrow, so I had the whole day off, how lucky! :)

Oh well, gotta keep on learning and fighting.

Before you pull off that head- which side is the water coming from? If it's the right side (under the intake) and it is really gushing out as you describe, it is much more likely it is a missing or leaking soft plug than a head gasket. There are a number of small ones under that intake that are hard to see.

No it's coming out of the driver's side...you can literally see it coming through several open spaces in there.

lol, I just realized we have almost identical engines mustang6 :)

Your head gasket is probably on back to front.

Can you tell me if you have oil pressure? The reason I ask, is because the oil pump driveshaft gets overlooked sometimes - and if you've missed the reversed gasket - then the oil pump is worth a mention.

I'm sorry steve, this sort of thing is extremely frustrating. It's just more evidence supporting the statement "if you want something done right, do it yourself"

Hang in there, you will get it.

The head bolts are 7/16 UNC.

Might be worth videotaping the head removal for evidence. Just a thought.

:( Hi MSR,been there done that.Another"oh shit"moment.Wish that I had a nickle for every time I had a screw up putting an engine together,OR having to fix someone elses screw up.

I would not risk a new engine with a major coolant leak. A new engine may weep a bit from things like frost plugs and a bit of stop leak is just the ticket for that (thats what they do in the factory). But from a gasket is a sign of a problem. You need to know what the cause is before you keep running the engine. Things like a head gasket are especially bad because they are one of the few places where you can mix coolant, oil, and combustion. If you want to kill and engine quick just mix any two of those 3.

Alright, let me explain...

Everything ended up being fine. The head gasket was fine, and it was torqued correctly. After talking with my grandpa about it, we believe we know what happened.

The head is off a 1970, and the block is a 1966. The block and head both have little indentions and gusset-looking things cast into them. However, they are offset (because of the year). We think that this was just a slight difference in shape, and corrected itself once we got it warm. The engine actually stopped dripping coolant before we even added the Bar's, but we did it anyways. I agree, any of those 3 mixing, and I'm screwed, but luckily, it wasn't the case.

Of course, we didn't realize all this until I had already removed it all, so it didn't matter in the end - still a lot of work. I've got a little fine tuning to do, but it ran and drove well.

Well, my block is a '66 and my head is a 78, and it didn't blow coolant all over the place...

Keep an eye on it, and keep an eye on your oil...
