Flexible Exhaust Pipes

All,
A question, I have 65 Mustang, inline 6 with duel peacemaker headers. I am reassembling the car and had a heck of a time removing the old pipes from the muffler to the headers (basically, cut them out with a dermal tool..sucked) I want to replace the 3 1/2 foot sections with flexible pipe I saw at Advance Auto. Will that cause any real performance problems or structural problems??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A buddy of mine fabricated an entire exhaust system for his '73 Nova with that Flex pipe. Is seemed to run about the same as it did before the old exhaust system came apart. I certainly wouldn't recommend doing that, but he did.

To split hairs, the inside is not as smooth ( :duh: ) as standard pipe. Therefore maximum exhaust velocity would be reduced. But enough to be a detriment? Probably not. The auto parts places are always selling the stuff, I suppose it can't be all bad. My biggest concern would be faint exhaust leaks, however, I have seen that pipe pass NJ emissions tests.

Besides, if you're running dual flex pipes, each pipe will be capable of flowing a lot more than your 6 will exhaust unless you're turning high revs and HP. You won't win a car show with it, but it should toot you down the road just fine.

Got any pics?. The dual outs I use are standard bends stocked at AardvarkAuto .. I suggest simple 2" pipe pieces with clamps or welds and lots of cheap rubber hangars. May be simpler than flexible pipe but you mileage may vary...

(4 I like the stainless band clamps but theyre pricey )

Have Fun...

I ran flex pipe for 3 years on a Maverick with a 302 and old school Thrush "outsiders". Never had a problem but converted to dual straight out the back because girlfriend kept burning her leg.

Yea i know they are usally used for temp installs. Does anyone know of a coupling type clamp or band I could use. I just do not want to have the old pipes welded back into place. If I ever have to do anything with the transmission, I would have to recut the pipes and that was a major pain. Also, I don't want to spend a bundle on the clamps, I know there are some pretty exspensive ones out there. I need 4 of course, 2 for each pipe, so I would appreciate any advise or if you know of a good band type clamp, please let me know.

Summit carries some really nice band style clamps. Maybe pricier than you're willing to spend, but really nice hardware.
