Flowmasters do the trick

I know there is a new muffler section but I just thougth you guys should read this. I heard the 63DropTop sound clip a few months ago, right around the time I was looking for exhaust. Well I decided to put the same exact setup on my 61 Falcon and holy sh!t!! 63DropTop and I and have very similiar engines, both have 200's that are bored over and have OZ250 2V heads with Pacemaker headers. When I fired the car up at the muffler shop every worker stopped what they were doing and walked over in awe. They couldn't believe it was "just a six." They all thought it sounded like a 5.0 Mustang. Anyway here it what I did,

2 Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow muffflers/offset in/ center out
H pipe, about two feet away from the header
2 inch alumminum exhaust pipe

I'm going to be doing that setup very soon. Thanks for sharing too, I've been trying to find a decent combo for awhile! 8)

This may be a dumb question, but why do you guys want your inline 6 to sound like a V8?

DUUHHHHHH, because sixes sound like balls compared to 8s.
When I did my set-up (back in the day) I heard a few inlines and didnt really think they were that great sounding. I decided that I wanted 40 series flows but the only mufflers that would work with the dual side exit set-up were a set of 50's we found off a cobra. I was a little skeptical about how it would sound but the minute I fired it up Flowmaster got themselves an unofficial spokesperson!!!!! Search the threads and if it says "What muffler?" etc, Im prolly in there pitchin my set-up.
Now that Im goin turbo with stock manifold feeding it, I dunno how it will sound. A buddy locally put my headers and dual 40's on his inline and they sound so much meaner...so I might swap to 40's with turndowns. What do yall think, will it sound good as is or what???? Wish I could retain the amazing sound and volume I have now but have the power of the turbo
Matt

I used flowmaster hushpower II mufflers from a dual outlet header then through an X pipe to the 2" hushpowers. The sound at idle is nice. there is very little drone when cruising, but on acceration it sounds like between a six & v-8 sound.
If i get the bug i may go to the flowmaster 40 delta series. I'm sure they will be louder but the exhaust note will sound meaner.
To be honest i am disapointed with the sound of the hushmaster II mufflers. When i get the engine back together I just might put 40 series delta flows on there.
DB the six cylinder sound just sucks. The closer you can come to an eight cylinder sound is music to one's ears.
need i say more. William

if u keep the farty inline sound the ricers will like u...who wants that. If u get a V8 sound...everyone will like u (except for hardcore ricers...but nobody cares about them)

My buddy that got my header, his is runnin thru 40s and it sounds like a big block is about to eat your lunch, its insane!

I dunno guys, that might be right if you own an inline six Chevy, but back when I had my Falcon Sprint running, with a single straight thru muffler, it was quiet at idle, but once I stepped on the throttle, I didn't need no uneven V8 music, the smooth screaming of the lil' six was perfect...

It is not that I wanted it to sound like a v-8, I wanted it to sound like a "car" with a well built engine. It's just that a lot of gearheads, myself included, have only ever heard v-8's, and that is the only sound they know to compare it to. Sure, I could call the sound I have now the straight six sound, but most people wouldn't know what I was talking about. I love the sound of my six and my six itself; at idle you can hear the cam at work, and you can even slightly make out the sound of my valves.

Just puttin' in my .02cents, my bronco sounds like a cummins diesel b/tw shifts and everybody asks, "man, you put a diesel in that thing." Single 2" exhaust, thru a blowed-out cheap glasspack. After the turbo fabrication I plan to run out of turbo to a 3" single in/dual out 2 1/4" flowmaster. We will just have to see what it will sound like, also there is just something about those two exhaust tips sticking out of the back of a vehicle.

ps. that includes the turn-down at the end of the tailpipe, too.

Several months ago I heard a BMW 330(?) blow past me on the freeway, it was going at least 95, but that exhaust tone was just beautiful, so smoooooth. I'm striving for a similar sound I hope I find a low-toned muffler with good flow. Anyhow it was just a question and those sound files did sound like a V8.

Out of curiousity, has anyone tried SuperTrapp mufflers on an inline 6 before?

How did it sound?

Granted, they are kind of ugly but the abilty to make them louder or softer by adding or removing disks is interesting...

I have been considering this set up for my car this spring... I have the header taken care of and would find some flowmasters to throw on it but I am wondering how important the h-pipe is to the setup... any ideas of how an h-pipe delete would effect sound and performance.

I can't imagine dual 40s. I have dual 50s and they are too loud for me. But I will admit this:

Idle: Just plan music to the ears.
Highway cruising: Can't hear them in the car, thought that may be a function of the sound mats and top noise or wind noise.
WOT: OMFG! I've stopped little old ladie's hearts. I still grin ear to ear when I hear it at WOT. gotta61comet has heard my exhaust and he can probably testify to it.

Why do I want the V-8 sound? Because I don't even both with ricers. I don't give them the time of day. The real reason. I love pulling a few minutes late into a show and shine, everyone turns to stare...and the crowd comes over while I get out of the car...asking to pop the hood.

And there...in all it's spender is this:

Watching the jaws drop...priceless.

But, I'm still debating pulling the 50s and putting in some turbo mufflers, or at least some resonators as that 2000RPM drone from flowmasters just annoys the crap out of me around town. But then I hit WOT and I just get giddy.

I never had an H pipe, was told I didnt need one. My favorite "tone" from the ole flows was when I would wind a gear up to about 2k rpm and let it sit there for a sec, then drop the throttle and listen to it pop. My other favorite thing, especially when lookin for a parking spot at the local hangout/pizza place, is to run it in first up to around 2k, then floor it and after a second drop it. Sounded so kool and everyone would look (outside eating area). I miss it  but soon I will have a few other new sounds to play with

I had a single in/out flowmaster 40 = too loud and the drone at 2000rpm was intollerable (for me anyway)

switiched to a single in/dual out and it is better but still a little too loud. the drone is better but still there. maybe cause i have the rear seat and carpet out it is louder then expected. but after cobrasix's comment i don't thinks so. i like the idle sound and wot, but that is it, so i mostly just drive slowly and punch it every now and again. I don't wish to spend any more money on mufflers and exhaust so i will leave it as it is.

anybody want a 40 series cheap make me an offer. it is hardy used maybe 50 miles +/- a few

thanks
John

What CobraSix said. That's why we want our inlines to sound like a V8. Just to amaze people and show them there is something other than a built V8. A built I6 :D
