Flywheel Removal

Ok what is the best way to loosen the flywheel bolts. When I try to turn them I turn the whole eingine, thus leading to the problem. Do I need to invest in an impact wrench? Any suggestions. BTW this is for a 8.5" clutch and the bolts I am talking about are the ones that hold the flywheel on the crank. Thanks for the help!

Impact wrench is easiest but a hammer and breaker bar will work. The idea is to rap the bar with the hammer sharply to get the same impact effect. the shock is to quick to turn into rotating force. Even a good stout box end wrench and hammer will usually suffice.

I do them exactly how Dan described; never owned an impact wrench. Use my non-hammering hand to hold the socket firm and square onto the bolt head or nut, and a 5 pound hammer to bash the bar with. A 6-point socket is best, if you can find one.

Cheers, Adam.

I use a piece of angle iron. I bolt it up to the cluch holes and use it to keep the crank from turning while I loosen the flywheel bolts. Angle iron is cheap, you can even get it from the hardware store with holes and slots already in it, this way you don't put any shock loads on your bearings.

I did it a cheaper, more shady method.

I took a fixed socket wrench (not a ratcheting) and put a break bar on it. I then put it attached to the crank pully bolt. I would turn the engine other until the breaker bar contacted the subframe. Then I heat the bolts up on the flywheel and used PB Blaster. I waited for 30 minutes and came back and broke the bolts free.

1) turn the engine in the direction you are turning your wrench to loosen

2) find a spark plug hole that is coming up on compression (both valves closed as piston rises)

3) stuff 6 feet of 1/4 nylon rope into that cylinder. the rope is soft and won't hurt anything. won't compress, either.
