from a 170 to a 250

Hello i am new to the site but have been a classic ford guy for a long time. i have a 1962 mercury comet and have had the car for the past 12 years and love it, the only problem i find with the car is the 2 speed trans and the 170,s lack of power, so i found my self a 250 engine and a C4 trans hoping to make it a better highway car. was just wondering if i'm headed in the wright driection and will my factory rearend hold up to the new setup. also what could i do to the 250 to max power but still keep it a good driving car?

thanks

Sounds good. To start out get a copy of "Ford Falcon Performance Manual" from classicinlines.com, it will explain a lot of what you want to know.

X2 "Ford Falcon Performance Manual" is a good first step.

I am a fan of the 250 & C4 combo it definitely will make it a better highway car. Will be doing that swap too, soon been on the hunt to find a good body. 250's are a tighter fit than a 170 or 200 in 63 down bodies but still doable. The answer is probably not on the rear end, you will be better off using an 8 inch rear like in the V8 cars and you should also upgrade the front end too V8 spec brake or go with disk's. Good luck on your build.

thanks for the help i will get myself a falcon pro man. i have been told that the mid to late 70's small ford cars are a good rear end and front upgrade to 5 bolt??

Actually for a highway cruiser you may want to consider an aod- if it will fit. I don't know much about them but believe they are plentiful.

Plenty of V6 Pintos and most V6 Mustang II's and all M II V8's had 8 inchers which will do the trick. Not always Traction Lok, but you can get lucky.

You don't want a 6.75" diff on all 4 cyl and some V6 Pinto's.Plenty of M II V6's had it too, sadly. Useless, no locker options, and no real strength.

They are 4 on 4.25 studd, so you either drill and fill for 5 on 4.5, or clock 45 degrees and drill 4 on 4.5, and make sure the drum brake inspection hole doesn't weaken the flange.

The ratios you can find on http://www.mustangii.org/decoder/axle/
