Fuel Line size

All,
Need some advise on my fuel line? I just had the engine rebuilt...We did some aggressive modification. Milled head, larger valves, cut log for direct mount of 2 bb Holly, bigger cam and pistons. I wanted to do the Carter Fuel pump upgrade but should I increase the fuel line size? I know I can do the part from the tank..But coming out of the tank looks small (anyone know the stock size?) has anyone done the Carter Conversion and what about the fuel line.

Steve

Steve, the stock fuel outlet for a six is 5/16. I would put an electric pump in the line & feed it into the mechanical pump.

However if you replace the sender in the tank, i believe they come with a 3/8 outlet. In that case i would install 3/8 all the way to the pump.

There is nothing worse than fuel starvation. If you have to keep putting larger jets in the carb, run a pressure test under full throttle to make sure you have sufficient pressure to the mechanical pump or carburetor. Bill

I've often seen fuel lines with unintentional damage. While 5/16" is supposed to be more than you need - what if it's been crushed somewhere and you don't know? For that reason, I see the 3/8" install as cheap insurance.

I have been looking around the internet but it seems all the sending units are 5/16" out of the tank. I even see it listed for the Shelby Fastback. It seems to me if the 5/16" line could handel the big V8 it would be well enough for my built up 6...Plus I can't seem to find the size out the outlet tube listed on any of the sending units

Yes, the stock sender has a 5/16 outlet. But, all the new replacement senders have a 3/8 outlet.

I replaced my sender about 1 year ago and found this out. I will be replacing my fuel line with 3/8 in the near future.

If you are replacing the line. Might as well upgrade to 3/8.
