fuel pump sucking air?

Then most likely it will be the wiring. If it an original stock wire harness there is a resistor wire (pink) coming from ignition switch run position (about 8 volts) to ignition coil and another from the sol. full 12 volts (start position) Old wires can be brittle and brake under the insulation (these can be very hard to find, sometimes you can feel them when moving the wire) so use a test light or volt / ohm meter to see if you have current going through it. Also an old well used ignition switch can give problems passing the power through it.

We bypassed all the wiring. We took it down to a hot wire from the batter directly to the + coil and the the pertronix to the + and - of the coil to see if power was going to the coil (sometimes yes, sometimes no). My cousin took the car to get it rewired. Hopefully that'll be it

"...cousin took the car to get it rewired..."
Wow, yes - good luck. Thanks for keepin us informed.
Can't wait to see what's up when U get it back...
