fuel tank problems

any of you have any home remedies for a rusty fuel tank. the tank is empty and out of car and appears to have quite a bit of rust on the inside. the tank does not leak but i was get quite a bit of junk in the filter. any help would be appretiated.

The old "water and a bunch of gravel" rattled vigorously will remove loose particles. Water is better than solvent because it will redissolve rust film, to an extent. Dry well afterwards, as the next step uses solvent based materials.

Use a proprietary tank slosh sealer after after that; a few brands to choose from. Paint the outside with POR-15 or similar for a nice tough fuel-proof finish.

I took a can of MEK and sloshed it around the gas tank for a couple of days and washed it out. It got most of the crude out of it.

Call around to local radiator shops. Most of them can boil the tank and remove the crud.

If it was REAL rusted, you need to seal it because the metal has probably gotten very thin, even if it doesn't leak (yet).

called the local rad shop for a worst case senario it will be in the $75.00 range, assuming it is not beyond what they consider ok to use. on the other hand i have found a few "slushing compounds" for about $60.00. i think ill try the rad shop. im sure they have more experiance than i do and the cost is negligible.
