This relates to all small sixes

Tom’s Refurb is a YouTube account that reminds me of what happens when a bunch of guys have the time, tools and resources to do whatever crazy ideas enter their heads. Recently Tom found a 66 Mustang Fastback with inline 6 that had been parked for 42 years and is making it his daily driver. He’s done a remarkable job of getting it back on the road.

The short story is that he’s got a stock engine with new fuel tank, electric fuel pump, an HEI distributor, big radiator, electric fan, better brakes, rebuilt cabin heater and lowered suspension. Aside from that and an oil change and new plugs it’s stock. He also put in an autolite 1100 clone that was as expected, horrible. More than likely because of the spark control vacuum not playing well with the HEI advance.

In this clip at 54 minutes and 30 seconds in, he swaps in a Holley 2 barrel 500 CFM carb. He installs the smallest jets he can find and it runs way better than expected. I’m really surprised. He also found an adapter for it on Amazon, again, super surprised.

Boy he reminds me of me. +/- 50 years ago, thank God. LOL.
Smart that he mounted the carb facing rearward so the linkage is accessible with the stock setup. (y)

He and his guys remind me of anyone who grew up with an interest in cars and a spot in a garage. My garage was one of the rotating gathering spots for teenage gearheads.

His welding skills are way better than mine were/are but then again, I was a teenager and the only welding gear I had was oxy/acetylene and often coat hanger wire to do my worst with. There were no migs and tigs in our garages. We did have them in metal shop in high school though.

Takes me back to those days in a couple of seconds.

I really like his inline-6 fastback. My coupe is great but boy, I’d love a fastback. I’m surprised it’s so well behaved with that 500 CFM Holley. I guess that adapter chokes off the CFM enough to make it work.

This was fun to watch! Impressive results from the 500 cfm carb.

... if you got interested in the Holley 500CFM 2Bbl, the same carb is available as a 350CFM carb which is much closer to what a mild build small block six can handle.
.
The 500 CFM Holley 2 Bbl is the Holley 4412 and same carb slightly whittled down is the Holley 7448 350Cfm 2Bbl.
.
The big 4412 500 was used on FE engines in trucks and buses mostly.
.
For Turbo and Supercharger use, there are specific simple mods' can be done on either carb at 'Hangar 18' website. Also the widely available and inexpensive "Boost Pressure Power Valve" for both can provide the solution to enriching under boost that is difficult with most carburetors.

have fun

Possible to get an air cleaner on there? Usually 2 barrels get mounted side ways, and I've read about issues with fuel starvation while cornering due to the carb orientation.
