is there any way to build an engine up to get really good gas mileage? i mean, you figure if you can build an engine to get 200hp, you gotta be able to go the other way and get really good mileage. just a thought.

8) building for gas mileage is as simple as building for maximum efficiency. in fact horsepower and fuel economy are not always mutually exclusive. you want as much compression as the engine can tolerate, wide lobe centers, high lift short duration cam, efi is best, but a well tuned carb can do very well, oh and slightly wider clearances(bearing, piston to wall, piston ring gaps), just open them up about 10% maximum. run synthetic oil in the engine trans and rear end, along with an o/d trans and a properly matched rear gear ratio.

If you build an engine right, you won't neccesarily lose mileage.
Complete stock 200, with 2.77 3-spd, I got about 25-26MPG with a good 1100.
Now: Aussie head, 390 Holley 4V, Comp 260H cam, T5 5 speed, electronic ignition, enlarged valves: Mileage: 26-27MPG so long as I keep my heavy foot off the gas.
The only difference: my new set up has a lot more power if/when I need it.
Remember, mileage and performance can go hand in hand. If done right, you can have your cake and eat it too.
