Gasket trouble

Hi all,

So I get it all buttoned up, start filling with fluids, and water is leaking everywhere.

Both the new waterpump gasket and t-stat gasket were soaked through to the edge when I pulled them off. I'm doing something wrong, but what is it?
:?:
I used Permatex (the reddish/orange stuff) on both sides of the gasket, smeared it on, let it get tacky, then bolted them right up. I'm getting new gaskets tomorrow and some lock washers for good measure. Any other advice?

You may have overtightened them. Also, is the head gasket on the correct way? One guy managed to get it back-to-front.

Sometimes the thermostat will slip a little and wedge the housing off the block. Another place to check is waterpump bolt lengths. They may be hitting the internals of the block before actually torquing down.
