Give me an open highway with no one on it.............

Well, I have been trying to figure out my inconsistent smoking/oil consumption and decided to just take the car out and open her up a little. I figured if she dies, let her go in a blaze of glory.
(Man I need to get me some new gears and an overdrive!!)
I went out this morning at 8 AM and got on to one of the main roads running through Phoenix (Bell Road). I took it west just to see how far it would go. Judging by the road signs, the road must go at least to the California boarder.
I think my smoke/oil consumption is based on my rings not seatting all the way. After driving between 2500 and 3000 RPM for about 80 miles, the smoking went away. My oil level is where I left it the night before. We'll see what happens when I do some city driving tomorrow.
By the way, I am concerned about my oil heating up too much and thinning out way too much. When driving the oil pressure sat at 40 PSI, but at stop lights it rapidly fell to 20 PSI. Maybe I should look into an oil cooler and thicker oil. I am running 40 wt right now.
Anyhow, if you are having smoke/oil consumption problems, you may help the situation by putting some highway miles on the motor to help the rings seat better. I don't know if this is a permanent fix, but I'll let you all know if things change for the worse.

With my engine, when it goes under about 900rpm the pressure goes to around 20-30psi, but the second it goes over 900rpm it hits 50psi. I just figured that was normal.

For my motor, with the short/city driving that I do, the oil pressure may drop to 30 to 35 PSI. Only when I get out onto the highway will it drop to 20 to 25 PSI. I just don't want my oil thining out so much that it is useless. Like I said, I'll keep everyone posted on any changes.

My inconsitent smoking and oil consumpstion has me ready to give up on the six. It is white smoke and I sometimes burn as much as a quart of oil in 200 miles. I now have 2,100 miles on the engine, so it must be broken in.

I think I may have found my problem and I hope I have. Yesterday after changing the oil, I had the engine running and I pulled out the PCV valve. When I put my thumb over the end of the valve, the idle slowed way down and the motor quit running. So I am hoping that my problem was oil being sucked into the intake manifold through the PCV valve. I pluged off the PVC and reset the idle this morning and did some errands. I did not notice any smoke today and I installed a new PVC. With the new valve my idle doesn't change when I put my thumb over the end. It is too soon to tell, but I am hoping

strat1960's Do you live on the west side of town?Bell goes around the White tanks and runs into I-10,AKA SunValley Parkway.

I went back out onto the highway this morning. The car ran great. I had it up to 97 MPH. I'm trying everything I can to seat these darn rings. The technician that worked on my motor said they used Molly rings. Do these rings usually take a while to seat? I may have overdone it on the speed thing. It's smoking a little more than before. What's got me confused is that the motor smokes, well lewt's be honest, quite a bit, but my oil level is still pretty close to where I left it. Hmmmm. By the way, my coolant level is right where I left it last month, so it's not coolant.
