glasspacks vs turbo mufflers

I'm back to looking for an exhaust system for my mustang. I love the sound of open headers, but that's way too loud being so close to me while driving. I want loud. I want to let people know that I'm coming. Glasspacks have always been in mind for me, but I just wonder if I'll get the best performance and sound, plus the best in releaving backpressure. On the other hand I've also looked at mufflers. I personally don't like the sound of flowmaster. They are over-rated in my book. I've looked at Dynomax Ultra Flo welded mufflers and Super Turbos. The Ultra Flos look quite expensive from Jegs. Almost $100 per muffler!

So what do you guys think about glasspacks vs mufflers?

I want good gas mileage, but a loud sound. I've got a loud sound system, so the exhaust won't bother me!

I like the sound of the Purple Hornies made by Flowtech/Holley.I've heard them on a 289 and it sounded wicked but I've never heard it on a six. Here's the link to the page.Check it out.

yeah depending of you get the ones that bolt to the header and continue to the rest of the exhaust system, the ones that bolt to the header and have the down turn, the ones that have round pipe on both sides to be inthe middle - end of the exhaust system or the ones with one round pipe end and one down turn end.all depends on how you want your exhaust to look and sound.Personally I like the idea of the ones that bolt to the header with the down turn.

Im glad you brought this topic up, ironically I have been experimenting with glasspack VS turbo mufflers, I found that, well, on my 200........ that a turbo muffler adds alot of bass, it actually quited my car down more then I had anticipated, and if I were to floor it all you would hear is my engine mechanically, So I went out and bought a glasspack it provided a much better sound. So im sticking with a glass pack on my inliner for now. I also have the stock manifold on so im sure that makes a difference in my sound. I can probably provide you a sound sample of my sixer.

Now, do they make a purple horny with the outlets on the same side to fit the stock location? ;)

In my case, I would have to get a slip-on muffler. I bought the FSPP Pacemaker header and they don't have the header flanges. I plan to run dual exhaust through the GT rear valance. I have thought about Flowtech Puprle Hornies. They sound great. But what's the difference between those and Red Hots? I would assume that the slip-on purple hornies would be fine near the rear of the car. I want that deep, throaty sound and loud at wide open throtle. Close to open headers or straight pipes, but with the best performance.

My friend has a cherry bomb glass pack on his 68 and I personally hate it. It sounds raspy and airy and not like a mustang..... I wanted the deep sound too. Flowmasters cost too much and I also thought they were overrated. I talked with my exhaust guy and he said that a camero muffler would give me a good sound and if i wanted it louder, V-Force would do that for me. So far ive been extremely happy with it. Im running 2 3/4 inch to the muffler, and 2 1/2 duals out. It looks sharp and I really havent noticed any affect to my car. Ill try to figure out how to get some sound on here for you.

I am running a single purple hornie slip on 2 1/4 in and out am getting ready to fab a dual exh next week and am going to use two of them I didnt care for the sound at first but it sort of grows on you I put it at the rear of the chero and when I go dual they will exit in front of the rt rear wheel I am hopeing to end up sounding like a E Jag useing a cliffy long tube header and exhuest divider the perple hornie was $25 through my local provider also got flow tech header reducers 2 1/2 x 2 1/4 prt #10005 for $14 and change just my .02

Goatbarron, I assume you are talking about Flo-Pro's V-force muffler. Their construction looks very similiar to that of Flowmaster's 50 Delta Flow mufflers. I don't know about those. I'm now kind of lingering to mufflers instead of glasspacks. Just for the raspy reason. I'm liking Dynomax's Ultra Flo, but the price is a little high.

Anybody got some Dynomax mufflers?

Yeah sorry, that is a flo-pro. It might have a similar constuction to the flowmaster but I garuntee you it sounds nothing like it.

backyardpb,

what turbo mufflers did you use? Generic? Sounds like you had the sound like I want now. My flows 50s are too loud.

i've got dynomax mufflers and i like 'em. but i dont think its what you are looking for. what about a glasspack as a resonator, and then a super turbo past that? a lot of the new cars of resonators before the muffler for sound. had a friend do it on his chebby. just an idea.

good luck bud, and let us know on what you decide.

I have dual dynomax super turbos. They are a lot louder than a regular turbo muffler, but not as loud as a flowmaster. :D :D :D

The flowmaster rusted out on my truck, so I'm going to replace it with a super turbo like I have on my Stang!

Later,

Doug

Arg, so Flowmaster is louder than Dynomax. Blasted. I heard some 50 flowmasters on my friends V6 Cougar and I liked it. So I might just go with Flowmaster after all. He told my I should pick Flowmasters or Magnaflows for the loudest sound. Jezzz.
