Gotta Re-ring the 200 Any advise?

So after some long thought, and plenty of advise from all the you guys here THANKS, about my previous problem with the blue smoke (rings) and the dry valve train (???) I have decided to pull the motor and do a mild rebuild.

Not anything too extensive just rings, seals, plugs, flush, port & polish on the head (if needed), and an adjustable rocker assembly. Gotta check the oil pump and pickup too while I'm at it so I am gonna pull the whole motor.

Here is my question: I found a re-ring kit that has options for the brands and just wanted to know if one brand is better than the other.

Here is what it comes with:
Cast Piston Ring Set - Perfect Circle or Hastings
Rod Bearing Set - Clevite/Mahle
Engine Gasket Set - Victor or Fel Pro

Anybody have anything good or bad to say about these?
 
8) upgrade to moly faced rings, and buy a new oil pump, dont mess with the old one. other than that your parts selection looks good.
 
I've got a new in the box set of .020 over Sealed Power Chrome Moly rings for a 200 I'd sell for cheap. My engine had to be bored .030 over and I was not able to use them.

$10 + shipping.

Basically there are three types of rings: cast, chrome, and moly. Cast rings break in fast and are good for less than perfect cylinders; chrome rings are best suited to dirty environments but can take a long time to break in; moly rings (called that because the face of the top compression ring has a groove filled with molybedenum disulfide) break in fast and provide excellent sealing. As one might expect, just as the rings differ, so do the cylinder wall finishes they require. Using the ground-up kit approach allows the engine builder to specify the type of rings desired as well as the cylinder wall finish to suit specific applications.
 
i just unassembled my 250.according to my feeler guage i have .014 clearance between the piston and the widest area of the taper.can i go back with the same pistons or am i going to take it to twenty over?

Why? Do I really need new chain and gears?

No, you probably don't need to do anything. But if you are sharpening up your engines performance, the stock OEM chains begin to stretch almost immediately. Gear wear isn't far behind. Sloppy cam timing makes for eratic tunning and performance. Mike has a double row, higher quality, longer lasting chain and gear set.

In doing the rering and bearings and a set of gaskets you'll have it mostly apart. At least check out the chain for slop and then decide. That's just my two cents, for what it's worth.

I definitely see what you are saying. I just got in my Falcon Performance handbook yesterday and after reading the entire book, WOW!

I did add that to my list and more! So much to do and so little money right now. It just pains me to think how much I could do with a few thousands dollars (that I dont have).

With all the help here and that guide, I am just bursting with new ideas for my car.
