Howdy Rdm52:
And welcome to the Forum. This will be a great resource to you to gain both better performance and economy from your '76 Granada.
First, know that there are several problems with a '76 Granada with a 250 engine. Some can be addressed and overcome easier thatn others.
The '76 250 suffers from four major inhibitors; 1. low compression and a tall quench height. 2. Too tall, or high gearing in the rear end. 3. Timing gears unique to the 250 that advance cam timing to gain low rpm grunt at the expense of higher rpm performance. 4 An EPA restricted carb and exhaust system.
The pluses are that stock you an excellent air cleaner/intake system. Just make sure that the air cleaner filter is in good shape. You have an excellent stock ignition system. Periodic Replacement of rotor, cap, plugs and plug wires is all that is needed. The '76 250 cam is possibly the best OEM factory cam ever used. The cam timing manipulation through cam gears is unfortunate.
Start by-
*Making sure your car is as light as possible.
*Tires are properly inflated.
*Maximize initial advance setting.
Next, assess what carb you have. It could be a Carter RBS (a good choice) or, a Carter YFA. The YFA is down on cfm compared to the RBS and more encumbered with EPA feedback controls. Next find out what rearend gear ratio your car has. Check the code plate on the frame of the driver's door and report here for help decoding. Most likely it will be in the 2.79:1 range- possibly higher. Replacing your 7.5 or 8.8 rearend with a 3.00:1 would help performance and possibly imporve mpg.
Dealing with the cam timing and the quench height and CR is part of a short block rebuild and is not easily or economically accomplished.
Ratter's suggestion of a good, free flowing 2" exhaust system is a great one- regardless of wht else you might do.
Enjoy the trip.
