Having trouble restarting engine

hmmmmm
I dont know what your problem is thats i could tell you with out looking at the motor. What CFM you running in your carb maybe it is to much and it is not getting enough spark to burn it all. Does the car try to start but just wont go, Meaning it is acting like it will fire. check your plugs cause somethimes they build up carbon. but this is all i can think of hope it helps.

I've always been able to get the engine to run fine but starting is still a problem when the engine gets warm. I put a US made AC mechanical pump on it and still no result. I also removed the intake heat hose and bypassed it with no difference in starting The problem is definately vapor lock/ gas vaporization. It got hot outside a while back and I took it out and was able to see the gas percolating in the bowl after I shut it off and removed the top. The fuel line is still going dry. I don't know if the gas in my area is the problem or what but the next step is an electric fuel pump near the tank with an low oil pressure fuel pump cutoff switch. I am gonna do that this weekend so we'll see what happens. I guess the fuel vaporises in the line pushing the gas in the fuel pump back in to the line then causing an air lock when I try to start it.

There's got to be some kind of vapour separator you can cobble up to it. After all, Stromberg supplied this with their carbs years ago, and I documented it in my 2V "essay".

I hate to say it again, but I had the exact same problem. Starter turned the engine over just fine when it had been sitting for more than an hour. The starter just wouldn't turn it over after stopping for a brief period. I did everything you have done, then replaced the starter. Now it starts after a millisecond, even if I just turned it off after running 80 on the interstate. I can't say for sure this is your problem, but it sure is easy and inexpensive to replace the starter.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't an electric pump solve vapor lock problems? You might give that a try. After all, it's only more money!!!

I am absolutely positively sure it's not the starter. When it is 100 degrees outside and after I have let the car sit to get the heat soak going I can crank the crap out of all day long until the battery goes dead. It cranks nice and fast but the engine does not fire that is the problem. When it does start it has difficulty idling and will stall like its starving itself of gas. I don't think the starter would have anything to do with the idling after it starts.

I'm very curious to see how this turns out. I'm having the exact same problem with my weber 38. Starts and runs great for about 20 minutes, then won't start again. I'm adding an electric pump and a phenolic spacer. If that helps, I may add a heat shield, too.

The electric pump seems to have made no differernce. I guess its down to the carb now as being the only thing left. I'm getting irritated by this as I hate throwing parts on a car to attempt to solve a problem. I should have replaced the carb a long time ago although it seemed to be in good shape when I rebuilt it. I have access to some other autolite 1100's that I'm going to try this weekend. I find it hard to believe the carb could cause this but the again anything could be possible. I would just do the 2 barrel conversion but I have another engine I'm building and want to finish that but still be able to drive the car with the old engine until then. Once it is fixed I sure will be happy though

Aaron,

I did a little research and locating an electric fuel pump back by the tank will eliminate the possibility of vapor-loc, so if that didn't fix your problem it's not vapor-loc. I think you’re on the right track thinking it's the carb. It's starting to should like something (a needle valve?) is stuck open allowing the fuel to drain back down the line, like removing your finger from the top of a straw full of liquid. How are your carb rebuilding skills?

hey

this may sound stupid but what type of gasoline r u useing my I now that my mustang wont run on the cheap stuff it will start and everything but die and not start. check the fuel filter may be cloged. or check the coil maybe the coil is old and when it heats up it breaks down and dies until it cools agian. Thats all i can think of hope your on the road soon.

Happy motoring,

Adam
