I pulled the head from my LTS today. I noticed that all 4 of the exhaust valves had a white ash look. The intake valves were alittle blackened. I'm wondering if the exhaust valves are burnt.

This is only my second head I've checked out in person. The other was from my XR5 and the valves (intake & exhaust) were blackened but no white ash looking coating.

Also, is there a way to remove a piston from the top? I don't plan on reusing any parts if I ever get around to rebuilding the HSO. But I'd like to snag a piston to use as a paper weight at work before I get around to tearing the engine down.

Not sure about the valves but to get a piston out you'll have to pull the pan and remove the rod cap bolts that what holds the piston in. Then just push the piston out the top. OOO I think the rod ends are the same size as the piston you might mesure just to make sure. If the rod ends are to big they won't fit through the piston bore. and you'll have to pull the crank to get a piston out..

The pistons will come out thru the top when the rod is unbolted and the cap removed. Obviously, the pan will have to come off, as per the previous post.

Can you photo that heads combustion chambers?

And, I beg, the details of the HSC timing gear? Pushrod length, harmonic balancer, timing chain and the bell housing pattern. Width from pan rail to pan rail?

Or should I join the Tempo/Topaz forum and hassle the rest of your mates there? :P :D :) :wink:

The Ford I4 is startingly like the Aussie I6. I found out that the Aussie 250 and 2.5 HSC have the same deck height the other day, after being certain it was 9.48" tall, its in fact 9.38" tall.

Still stand on that offer to cut up my spare Alloy Head x-flow and turn it into a cross-flow I4 head....
 
Most likly a head of a valve that is whitish looking is a good sign (means that
it was running a little lean) in fact if all are close to the same color that is also good meaning all hole are burning the same. If you have one valve that is much darker it usally shows that you had incomplete combustion on that hole. unless there is a injector stuck open plug or plug wire dead then the only other cause is low or very low compression. when a valve burns enough to lower compression the deposits will change color as the temp changes in the chamber.
