Hi, im new here at fordsix.com, just want to say that what you guys have going here is great! tons of useful stuff. I need a little help, I recently installed a Holley 2300 350 CFM carb into my 200ci engine, when I finally got it running, white smoke came out from the exhaust, also i dont know what to do with the trans kickdown lever on the carb because i have no cable for that thing, any ideas? . thanks in advance.

Howdy Hanshussong:

Welcome to the Forum.

It would be most helpful if you would give more complete info about your car and engine. What year? Mileage? Etc.....

It is very difficult to diagnosis an engine problem when you have the vehicle in front of you. It is impossible without and with only the info you gave. Please be more complete and detailed.

Is the carb mounted to the engine with an adapter or direct? Is the carb new? Used? Rebuilt???

There are many here that have been down this road and could be very helpful to you, but we need the details. As always, the devil is in the details.

Adios, David

sorry about that, it is a 1965 mustang, the carb is brand new mounted on a clifford adapter. the odometer reads 72063. once i turn it once, it runs fine for about 2 min, then, white smoke comes out of the exhaust, and where i have the car parked, it leaves a black ball on the ground from the exhaust. when it had the old carb in it did not do all of this, since i took out the old carb here is what i put in. :
Msd Ignition box
Msd Coil
Valve covers
Air Filter
Pertronix elec. ignition
air breather
pcv valve
fuel line
vacuum line
and the holley carb.
any ideas of what might be causing this?

well the black ball would indicate it being rich.

how cold is it out where you are? I konw it sounds stupid it could just be cold out? (thats what I thought when I got mine running at first....then when it warmed up but looked just as bad I changed my mind)

when I was running the stock 2.3L jetting on my 5200 the exhaust was SPOTLESS inside....no carbon anywhere!!. now that I have a rich jetting holley it is all black again....

great, i will lean the mixture, but what about the white smoke? a friend of mine said that it had to be oil getting into the combstion chamber?, another question, can i put in a normal air breather instead of the pcv valve?

First lets get rid of the black spot. Use 59 jets & make sure your choke is not staying in the rich position. What kind of choke do you have??? If its a manual choke you can control the setting, however if its an automatic choke you need to refer back to my previous post over 6 months ago, concerning choke pull-off adjustments.

Since you put a different valve cover on make sure your pcv valve is not sucking oil from the pcv port on the valve cover.

This should give you some ideas how to deal with your problems. William

i leaned the mixture, and now the black spot is fading, but i just noticed that white smoke also comes from the air breather and the pcv valve as well as the exhaust, now its hapening as soon as i turn on the engine.

Uh oh, sounding more like water getting where it shouldn't be....

What's your oil look like? Thin and brown to black or any of the following: milky/thick/murky/foamy?

If any of the latter, could be a blown head gasket.

mmm... the oil is pretty old, kinda brownish, the thing is that i have to put in a new pedal. a cable pedal because of the linkage on the Holley, the oil filter says may-2003, once i get the pedal i will get a transmission oil change and a motor oil change. think that may fix some of the problems??

Howdy All:

Hans- The white smoke is a puzzle. Williams suggestions will help to deal with an overly rich carb, but that is no usually IDed by white smoke. White smoke is more typical of water vapor. That's why Mustang6 asked about the condition of your oil. Changing it will not solve the problem, but it will help to get fluids out where you can assess them, and you can get fresh fluids in an up to proper levels.

Water leaking into the combustion chamber will cause white smoke. water leaking into your oil will change its color and nature.

A blown vacuum modulator in a C4 auto trans will also cause white smoke in the exhaust. You didn't say what tranny you have. If auto trans fluid is disappearing that's a likely possibility.

More curious is why this happened when you changed to the Holley. I don't think the white smoke has anything to do with the Holley carb.

Check it out and report back.

hi, i tuned the carb yesterday, and i noticed that the pcv vaccuum from the carb was loose, also i have a hose running from the pcv valve to the clifford adapter and i was thinking of putting a "T" in the line and also connect it to the carb but i opted to put a small air filter (the carb sucks A LOT OF AIR) and it works fine will post pics of my setup later today. The white smoke is going away, since its coming from the valves i was thinking it might be the new gasket and the glue i put on it, any chance of that being the problem?? I will install the throttle cable today and hope to get it moving by the end of the day.
