I have a 1966 Ford Mustang (my baby) but unfortunately I have not been able to trive her due to the aged carberator ... I need help ... the previous owner swappedthe AUtolite 1100 with a Holley 1947 ... I have had people say that it need to be replaced or rebuilt ... the problem is that when I press down the gas pedal it will imediately stutter and sometimes shut off ... it's not only frustrating but dangerous. I need help to fix this .. if ANYONE has any suggestions or has had the same problem please help me ... I need to get her back runnin strong ... thank you very much ...

Howdy Thomas:

I don't know of a Holley #1947, but Holley produces a #1940 as a, one-size-fits-all, to replace the no longer produced, correct Autolite #1100 that your '66 Mustang came with. THe Holley #1940 was a poor replacement.

It should not be confused with the later #1946 used on the '80s 200, but these have no Spark Control Valve and will not be compatible with your stock, OEM Load-a-Matic distributor.

If your current carb is not compatible with your ignition you will have more than just carb problems.

Your solution is to get a carb that is compatible with your ignition system and that is working properly. Or to upgrade your ignition system to a '68 or later non-Load-a-Matic distributor system and match it to the correct carb with a ported vacuum source for the distributor.

Merry Christmas.

HI
Maybe its the accelator pump.. Look down the carb and move the linkage and see if there is a spuart of gas going in (motor off). If not replace the accelator pump.

Without proper spark advance all else is like the old pi$$ing in the wind syndrome.

The "Old Car Manual Project" has a master list of old Holley's, and they don't show a #1947. Got any other numbers off the carb body or maybe a tag?
http://www.tocmp.com/manuals/Carbs/Holley/MasterList/index.html

If that carb doesn't have the SCV (looks like a modern Holley power valve screwed into the carb body somewhere), you aren't getting the right vacuum advance to your distributor.

Here are some numbers I found on the carb ... mabey it will help someone to identify my carb ...

34R-5008B

80220-1049

6R
3806 <- (was circled)
B

Thanks

I can't find anything online referencing those numbers, the closest I come is a carb for a 350hp/327 Corvette engine...not.

Got a picture?

Probably ought to pull the carb and take it to a good parts store and have them reference the numbers.

Howdy Back Thomas:

The Carter YF will not work with your Stock OEM Load-a-Matic distributor. Read the stickies at the top of this forum. The carb you need to be compatible with your L-a-M distributor has to have a Spark Control Valve (SCV).

If you want to upgrade to a '68 and later Distributor then the Carter YF would be a good choice. You would still have to adapt for the linkage. The '77 YF used a cable throttle linkage in OEM application.

Merry Christmas

I just went through this with mine. It was difficult to figure out what carb I had. That carb from ebay is a 1946. My carb is a 1940, "the never factory installed carb, but aftermarket only replacement carb".
My 1940 works great, no problems although not great mpg (high teens). I just replaced the accelrator pump and now all is well again. The later 1946 is the same, but it has some smog stuff on it from what I gathered.

i have an 1100 I am putting on

OR get a 2bbl. the primary is smaller and you only burn lots of gas when you jump on it

or maybe you can re-jet the 1946....too much trouble in my opinion
