How Bad...

Are those crappy Ebay Turbo's?

Right now, I have my heavily used T3 that is burning oil. I am not really in a position to drop the sort of coin I want on a "real" replacement.

What's the downside of dropping 200 $ on a cheapo Ebay turbo to bolt on there, make a little boost, make sure all my other stuff is working, and eventually be replaced by a Quality Unit.

I am getting sick of the car being down.

rebuild the T3 you have then?

just a couple bolts (the hard part) and some snap rings.

as long as you can get the bolts out of the turbine housing you are golden.

The cheap eBay turbos are Chinese copies. If you dislike the quality of Korean or Taiwanese parts, just wait till you see what the PRC is passing off as the real thing. Best to avoid.

Well, I have already had it completely apart - so that's no problem...

I am just concerned that it will actually cease leaking when I put it back together :)

Anyone have experience with this ?

Thanks. (Also, I was hoping to upgrade to an internal wastegate)

ME! ME! ME! Pick me!

Bort, that was one the thing that happen to me...leaking oil. Since the rebuild I am at least 1500 miles on the turbo now and no problems.

What is your oil pressure like during idle, cruise, & WOT? I do not know, but sometimes a restrictor in the oil line to the turbo is needed if that is the case. There is a topic w/ Bill(wsa11) about oil pumps and pumping too much oil pressure due to the bypass not working correctly. Check it out.

Like said before, it is an easy rebuild, just make sure you get the right seal. There are three for the T3.

The only thing I was skeptable about was the torque on the compressor wheel, it is inch-pounds and I did not have a torque wrench like that, and was not going to buy one (mucho bucko's). I just tightened the compressor wheel until there was no play in the shaft and where it was still able to free spin. It worked for me.

Thanks Kirk...

I took the turbo completely apart before and "ghetto rebuilt" it... IE cleaned all the parts and made sure nothing was obviously trashed.

So doing that again with new parts will be a breeze. How do I know which seal I need?

As far as oil pressure, I don't have a gauge on it so I don't know. I put a restrictor in the line and that didn't seem to help.

The three seals are kind of different in appearance, they are not too hard to tell apart:

That ought to help you.

ps. click to the full size pic or the names of the seals will be hard to read.

8)

IIRC Turbo City has rebuild kits and parts.

Also, I have seen several people talka bout cleaning out the oil lines near the turbo as heat can cause carbonization to build up insider the oil lines near the turbo so make sure those arent gunked up. Someone told me you could run a pipe cleaner through there.

I have access to some T3's but havent gotten up the courage to try rebuilding them yet.

My friend has a 84 turbo coupe 2.3L , a 87 turbo coupe 2.3L, and a 88 turbo coupe 2.3L

The 84 has integral wastegate while the 87 doesnt. IIRC the 88 is a IHI unit that was considered too small for a 2.3L so not looking at it

Ahh okay - thats for the compressor seal?

I've got the dynamic type.

Where did you get your kit?

I believe it was ebay, purchased from "anythingturbo" and it was American made parts. They say do not get the china made parts. Total w/ shipping was @ $59.00.
