Don't line up the dots. I believe you have to count the links. Been a while since I did it but I think you will need something like 9 links between the cam dot and the crankshaft dot.
now for some reason when i tightn up the cam gear bolt it seams to cause a lot of friction btween the cam gear and the cam thrust plate. is this normal? makes it very had so turn rotate the eigine when bolt is tight. i thogut about getting a torrington bearing to put between the two surfaces?
Dirt between the parts, Cam gear in backwards, Crank gear in backwards, MISSING THE SPACER BETWEEN THE CAM GEAR AND CAM, wrong bolts on thrust plate, wrong gears or chain, rear cam freeze plug in too far. Is the woodruff key installed? Hope this helps.
There is another spacer. It goes between the cam sprocket and the cam front journal and is inside the hole in the thrust plate. The spacer is just a few thousandths thicker than the thrust plate. It establishes the end play for the cam. On many other engines, the spacer is made integral with the cam sprocket.
Motor Manuals, Chilton Manuals, Ford repair manuals, appropriate year web sites for Ford cars and trucks, and Ford parts catalogs. If this part has been lost, do you still have the woodruff keys for the cam sprocket and crank sprocket? The cam key has to be removed to take the spacer off the cam.
I installed a new cam in this engine and i did remove the key. i dont rember seeing any spacer though i will go home this after noon and look again. thanks for the help!
