Ok,

Here is what I have done in the last 24 hrs.
1. Repaired a coolant temp sensor leak
2. Removed the carb
3. Removed the intake manifold
4. Removed the exhaust manifold.
5. Drilled and tapped the two "Hot" holes
6. Squirted a little bit of Ultra Copper RTV into the "Hot" holes and coated the bolt's threads with the Ultra Copper RTV.
7. Really tightened everything down.

Now I am putting it all back together. I think the majority of my exhaust smoke in the engine compartment came from a failed exhaust manfold gasket due to improper tourqe. The exhaust gasket had several burnt sections and a few sections that just were not there anymore. I installed a new gasked and really wrenched down on the manifold bolts. I put the exhaust manifold on after I put the intake manifold on and remember having a hard time getting to all of the bolts. I coated the exhaust manifold bolts with loc-tite and used the header bolt lock washers. This should keep everything in place for the time being.

This AM, I will put the intake back on and then the carb. Now here is a question for those of you with the Aussie Head:
When I pulled the carb yesterday, I noticed the inside the intake, just below the area the carb mounts, a puddle of gas. There was enough gas in there to almost cover the little ripples inside the intake. Is this normal? Is this something to be concerned with?
Thank you for all of your help.

 No, that is not normal. Your engine could become somewhat hotter than planned. Your carb is leaking fuel or grossly overfuelling.

Sounds like either your carb is boiling over (really hot, though unlikely) or more likely your float is set too high.

lok-tite on the exhaust bolts  you might want to re-think that. :? I usually put "never-seize" on mine. The years of hot/cold cycles will usually make 'em lock in anyway. And snapping off bolts to remove a header/manifold is a pain in its own way :x

I would have to agree with Mugsy on the locktight issue. Mine also always get a coat of Antisize!

The reason I used loctite is this:
Some of the threads for the exhaustmanifold bolts are worn. I tried to re-thread a couple. As soon as I get past the cam break-in, and get the motor times and tuned better, I am going to an exhaust shop to have my dual headers installed and an exhaust system welded up. I am sure it will be fine. It may only be a week or two at the most.
Thanks for the concern, I just wanted to be sure it doesn't come loose or leak.

Ted
