I will install whatever is the most popular choice picked in this my first poll.
I have given up, trying to decide what mufflers to install for my Mustang.

Here are my thoughts...

I would like a quiet ride, but I would like to hear the engine if I slam on it.
I would like to be able to go up a hill in low gear and be quiet, which should not be a problem with a 3.97 1st gear and a 3.25 rear ratio.

this thing will be a little heavy on the cam... it will wind and sound nice, so hearing it will be fun at times.. but I would like to be able to sneak around sometimes.
I will run dual out of the headers to the mufflers and out the GT valance through the stock GT tips.

So I have decided these are my choices... you vote, whatever wins I will install.

Deal !

Called in to the shop today and the guy there recommended the 40 series Flowmasters over the Borla mufflers... actually they were trying to talk me out of the Turbo mufflers all together... they think it will sound too import like.

I happen to feel different... I think the Borla option is the best one.. and by the current vote it looks like I will be getting Borla mufflers. Unless something changes by the time I tow the car in...

But they said putting the 3 chamber Flows on would defeat the purpose of buying the Flowmasters... they said the 2 chamber 40's would be the best of both worlds... loud and quiet... with a good low tone?

I hate my Flowmaster. It sounds like a cow bellowing thru a sewer pipe. It will be the first thing to go when I start working on the car again.
:xCurse that muffler, the muffler man who talked me into it, and all his decendents........ok maybe that's a little too strong. :?

have you thought of Dynomax turbos. I know it's been a debate on which muffler is best for each application, but from some of the posts, the consensus seems to be that flowmaster 40s are good overall but they have an annoying drone to them at certain rpms/speeds. it would be nice if there was some way of posting different exhaust options and how each sound in the tech section. hrm.....

I voted for Borla since I am yet to hear anything good about Flowmaster(how they became as popular as they are is beyond me).

As for you wanting a quiet idle, and loud WOT, how about MAC Flowpaths?
My 2001 is silent at idle, but sounds louder than a GT at WOT. Someone else on Stangnet said they heard MAC's next Flows(on '67/'68 302 cars), and the MAC's were hands down a better quality sound. The only problem is I am unsure of whether or not they offer anything under 2.25". But it's worth a shot.

I'd still choose Borlas over the MAC's for sound, but the price difference is too much to ignore.

That brings up an interesting point...

What set of Borla Pro series mufflers?
and how much should I pay for them?

Maybe I will start hunting on E-bay...
I have seen them on there...

If I get some for a stock GT route would I want center in center out or an offset pattern? I am running 2" from the headers to the mufflers and out the tips in the valance.. I think I have mentioned that but it does not hurt...

I know we have talked about this for some time...
and you can be sure I will take some sound files and post .aiff files...
wish we did have a section for that... but the problem lies in the diversity of setups and how each one is different...

there was a post a while back with links to how certain mufflers sound, but they are all V8 engines for the most part and sound nothing like our cars.

PUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRR-pppp-LLLLLLLEEEEEEE
HHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-nnnnnn-IIIIIIEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS

my best-friend back home just got some on his Z-71 (at my promptings he-he  ) scared the crap out of him at first, but now he likes them mucho big time
but he's a young-un, so he has hearing that he has yet to lose

me, i'd go for Dynomax

That dealer does not carry the 2" center/center....

but Borla does make them...
40347 2" 2" 14" 4" 9 1/2"

I just need to order a set....

Still unsure about the sound quality... but I like the Borla samples on the webpage better than most of the others....

are the Dynomax Ultraflos loud? That's what I'm looking for. I want people to know that I'm coming wheter they like it or not. I'm down to something like this:

Borla
Dynomax
Magnaflow
Glasspacks

decisions decisions

Goto the Mustang sound link in post above. You can hear it. I really like the sound.

would this be a simple rule:

the more cfm = the better and deeper the sound?

Dynomax stats 1130 cfm on their test using their ultraflow welded vs. the competitors.

whats really best muffler setup:

center - center

center - off center left/right

or does it really matter?

Well the exhaust went in today....

They ran 2" rust proof pipe straight back into two Flowmaster Series 70 center in center out mufflers and up over the axle through the valance....

I decided to go with the flowmaster for now... I went on the recommendation of the guys doing the install, they felt with the tips and resonators the 70 series would give me the best compromise between sound and performance on the engine...

they also said if I hate the sound they will install another muffler of my choice for the difference in cost.

They welded the pipe directly into the headers... another suggestion on their part instead of using clamps.

With the mufflers, resonators, exhaust, (I provided the tips and hardware) installed my total came to $385.00 (original estimate was for stock system at $235.00... mufflers cost an extra 150.00)

I am picking the car up tomorrow and will have it home for the weekend... I should have it running by next weekend... I will post some sound files once I get it going.

Thanks for the suggestions... I would have gone with the Borla mufflers and still might, but I would like to hear this setup first....

Definitelt post those sound files!!!!! I am thinkin bout goin 40 series and would like to hear what your sounds like first.
Matt

Borla ProXS's. I along with 2 other people installed them and we all love the sound!!! I have had countless comments about the sound...hearing many times that it is unbelievable that the sound is coming from a six banger! Quiet at idle but really ROARS when you get on the gas.

Good Luck!
Mike

i caution you not to pick your muffler based on what it sounds like on a V8. The # of cylinders is probably the biggest influence on the basic essence of an exhaust sound... its why ricer engines all sound the same, why V8s have a characteristic blurble, and why V6s sound like bumblebees.

I have 40 series delta flows Flowmasters on my 66 and love them, but they are on a 351W and quiet idle is not what i was shooting for. I've always loved Borla on six cylinder engines and more modern 8's because they sound like high-end european exotics, but 2 chamber Flowmasters are my favorites on muscle cars because they tend to sound like death/raw power when revved.
