I advocate adding an overdrive tranny instead of changing rear axle ratios. They arn't that hard to find or install except some of the wierd controls that you really don't need. If you are interested pm me and I will discuss it further.
To an automatic?

Actually I did look for overdrive add on units a few yrs back that you could plug into the back of your transmission. Doesnt matter what kind of transmission. The unit is nothing more than a industrial gear reducer set up to accept a drive line yoke. When I looked at them, I thought they were outrageously expensive and dropped the notion of having that. The original manual transmissions with overdrive are all gone. Cant find one anywhere, and most folks who do have them are all looking for a working solenoid to operate them. Bleh. I'll pass on that.
We seem to have hyjacked this topic.

Luckyman, I'll check out the tachs, Fred- I'm looking for a 3-sp LD tranny for my truck, From what I understand there was a couple different ones for the shortbeds and uni's, but sounds like you can make the longbed version work. Thanks for your help.

My dad as an original '56 or so three speed overdrive with working solinoid that he would sell. Around here you can still find overdrives and parts. I see them all the time on ebay too (at least the R10 units).
